“What happens to lovers while they are sleeping?” asks German photographer Paul Schneggenburger. “Is it a sleeping just next to each other, each on his own, or is there a sharing of certain places or emotions? Is it a nocturnal lovers’ dance, maybe a kind of unaware performed tenderness, or does one turn their back on each other?” In Schneggenburger’s gorgeous photo series, The Sleep of the Beloved, which we spotted over at My Modern Met, he takes long exposure photographs of sleeping couples, capturing them between the hours of midnight and 6am. The resulting images are ghostly, lovely, and surprisingly intimate. See a few of our favorites after the jump, and then head over to Schneggenburger’s website to learn more. … Read More
10 of the Most Twisted Short Stories About Love
It’s almost Valentine’s Day, which has us thinking about affairs of the heart — but not in the Hallmark card way, of course. Yesterday saw the release of Ludmilla Petrushevskaya’s There Once Lived a Girl Who Seduced Her Sister’s Husband, and He Hanged Himself: Love Stories (an even better title than her last translated collection, There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby: Scary Fairy Tales), and needless to say, the book is full of off-kilter, lurid, even violent attempts at connection. To celebrate the book’s release (and stock you up on reading in advance of Valentine’s Day), we’ve put together a list of ten of our favorite thoroughly messed up short stories about love. But of course, the literary world abounds with these, so read through and add your own twisted favorites in the comments. … Read More
Gorgeously Decomposed Film Frames from the 1900s
Sometimes decay can be as beautiful as perfection. At least that’s the feeling we get looking at these gorgeous 35mm nitrate film frame clippings from the Davide Turconi Project, which we spotted over at 50 Watts. According to Joshua Yumibe, who curated the selection, “such frames make up a relatively small yet remarkable portion of the collection. As these shapes and hues have tragically faded in disintegrating emulsion, we are left with fragments that, through the workings of time, have transmuted into breathtaking images akin to abstract works of art.” Indeed, each of these images, already art in its own way, has become something mysterious and remarkable — a new life for an old story. After the jump, check out a few of our favorites, and then be sure to head over to 50 Watts to check out the rest of the collection. … Read More
10 Famous Authors on the Importance of Keeping a Journal
Many famous writers have kept journals or diaries — for many, it is a creative necessity, for others, a place for exploration, and for some an art form in and of itself. This week, Brain Pickings treated us to a few passages on the art of keeping a diary from Virginia Woolf’s A Writer’s Diary, and we were inspired to see what other authors had to say on the topic (we were also inspired to resume our old diaries, but never mind). After the jump, read ten famous writers on the importance of keeping a journal (or, in some cases, the lack thereof), and let us know whether you keep your own notebook, journal or diary in the comments. … Read More
Unsettling Photographs of Mirrored, Floating Trees
What happens when you take a mirror into the natural world? In Traci Griffin’s work, which we recently spotted over at Faith is Torment, the photographer reflects images of trees back into themselves, creating strange formations that seem wholly one with and apart from their original selves. The floating branches become something altogether new, looking alternately like enormous insects, or family crests, or racks of antlers on unseen stags. As Griffin explains, ”I read about symmetry in art, which seemed needlessly complicated. I learned that exact symmetry cannot be found in nature and allegedly the concept of symmetry in the universe has tormented famous philosophers for centuries. Perhaps this is why the images are slightly disconcerting. Personally, this project for me is simply about seeing something completely different in something so ordinary.” Check out a few of our favorites after the jump, and then head over to Griffin’s website to see more of her work. … Read More
The Authors With the Juiciest Love Lives
Today marks the 140th anniversary of the birth of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, the French novelist and performer who was, during her lifetime, hailed as France’s greatest female writer. She also had a particularly exciting love life, and a pretty stupendous life in general, and her sensual semi-autobiographical novels continue to delight readers to this day. To honor Colette’s birthday, we’ve put together a list of a few of the famous authors with the juiciest love lives, to inspire us all to love a little more extravagantly. And hey, Valentine’s Day is coming up. Read about them after the jump, and if we’ve forgotten your favorite tale of literary romance, add it to our list in the comments. … Read More

Around the World in Beautiful Typography
Turkish photographer and designer Gokhun Guneyhan, whose work we recently spotted over at Visual News, travels around the world taking photographs of cities and their architecture, and then interprets each city, country or street in overlaid typographic letters. We love the way the end results look like posters for beautiful places, and the way a certain locale can be so perfectly evoked with a delicate swoop of line or a serif — and hey, Guneyhan’s great photos don’t hurt. After the jump, check out a few of our favorites, and then head on over to Behance to see more of Guneyhan’s work. … Read More

The Best and Worst of Last Night's 'SNL' with Adam Levine
Ladies and gentlemen, last night we found Saturday Night Live… actually pretty funny! No, there weren’t any classic sketches, and yes, Adam Levine is clearly not used to reading cue cards, but overall, Levine charmed, we laughed, and only a few segments totally dragged. Plus, we got to see cameos from Cameron Diaz and Jerry Seinfeld. After the jump, chuckle at the best sketches and throw your popcorn at the worst — or tell us we’ve got it twisted in the comments. … Read More
