Exclusive: Love him or hate him, there is no escaping The Neighbour

+

Bombay-based artist Ashok Sukumaran’s latest exhibition The Neighbour is his first major one-man show in Europe; it explores the UK’s caravan culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s, comparing and contrasting two kinds of mobile housing popular at the time: the static mobile home that was trying to be a vehicle and the VW caravan that was trying to be a home. Exclusive: Bucking the Taboo of Futurism in North London

1

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in North London is ‘one of the finest collections of early 20th century Italian art anywhere in the world’ according to Tate Director, Sir Nicholas Serota. And he’d know. Best known for its iconic Futurist works, many people are unaware of the museum’s broad collection of modern Italian art and artists from other schools. In celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Futurist manifesto, they’re currently exhibiting Umberto Boccioni, one of the most significant characters of the first wave of Futurism alongside contemporary artist Luca Buvoli, who is perhaps one of the only living artists who draws inspiration from Futurist ideologies to create works that parallel today’s society and events.

Flavorwire spoke to Chris Adams and Harry Hare, curators of the Futurism 100! exhibition (which runs through April 19), to find out more about this unique pairing of artists.

Exclusive: London’s Photographers’ Gallery Relocates, Reinvents

1

In December of last year The Photographers’ Gallery relocated to London’s West End, leaving behind two separate locations on Great Newport Street and 37 years of history. But the move to Soho wasn’t an attempt to downsize in the tough economy: The gallery’s four-story home on Ramillies Street boasts twice as much exhibition space and the opportunity to expand. Launching the new space were two exhibitions, Soho Nights, the second part in the Soho Archives series, and The Westerns by Katy Grannan; starting February 20th, you can stop by to check out an exhibition of works from artists shortlisted for this year’s Deutsche Börse Photography Prize — including Emily Jacir, who we interviewed here.

After the jump we chat with gallery director Brett Rogers to find out how they settled on a design for the new gigs, why she wants to revive male fashion photography, and what kind of audience she anticipates the latest incarnation will attract.

London Art Buzz: Wildlife Photographer of the Year Winners

1

01-1

London’s Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine’s annual exhibition Wildlife Photographer of the Year never fails to deliver. Every piece is the product of a photographer’s patience, dedication, and willingness to withstand harsh weather conditions and uncompromising situations.

The overall winner for 2008 is American photographer and National Geographic contributor Steve Winter, who captured the elusive Snowstorm Leopard in Ladakh’s Hemis High Altitude National Park in India after 10 months of waiting. According to Walker, “After 10 months and a winter with little snow in Ladakh’s Hemis High Altitude National Park, India, I was running out of hope of getting the picture I wanted. But one freezing morning I checked my remote-controlled camera and found a snow leopard had triggered it the night before, in the frame I’d dreamed of — in its true element.”
