Shadowy, Eerily Desolate Black-and-White Photos of New York City
Bright lights and throngs of people are the first images that come to mind when we picture New York, but both are absent from Gabriele Croppi’s arresting photos of the city. His Metaphysics of an Urban Landscape series — which also includes shots from Moscow, London, Paris, Rome, and more — uses high-contrast photography to highlight lone figures surrounded by shadows, against the background of the world’s most recognizable architecture. For the New York collection in particular, Croppi’s aim was “to silence one of the most chaotic and noisy cities in the world,” resulting in images that are both gorgeously composed and eerily desolate. Click through to see some of our favorite familiar-made-strange photos of the city, which we discovered via PetaPixel, and visit Croppi’s website for more of his work. … Read More

Photos of New York City from a Bike’s Point of View
Spotlighted by Petapixel, photographer Tom Olesnevich’s NYC By Bike project gives viewers a perspective of the city that most of us have never experienced before; he shot the series using a DSLR that he strapped to the bottom of his bicycle. (Yes, this was risky, but his camera managed to survive its one run-in with a semi.) The resulting images — which, as the avid cyclist explains, are his love letter to NYC — capture almost all of the traditional visual landmarks, from Radio City Music Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge to the Apollo Theater and Chinatown, but from a vantage point that will make you look twice. Click through to see the streets through your bike’s eyes. … Read More
Bizarre Sculptures Made from Old Bike Parts
Creating a work of art from a box of discarded bike components might sound like a daunting task, but that’s exactly what the 80 artists participating in this year’s pART Project have done. What’s more, their pieces are being auctioned off on November 29 in New York City, with the proceeds going to World Bicycle Relief, an organization that uses bicycle mobility to fuel development projects in sub-Saharan Africa. Pretty cool, right? Click through for a slideshow of some of the most interesting bike-part art, which we spotted thanks My Modern Met, then grab your tickets for the charity auction here. … Read More
Best Telethon Ever: Strike Debt’s Scrappy, Brilliant People’s Bailout
“Hello, my debt is $40k.” As we entered the People’s Bailout last night at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge, a volunteer invited us to make a name tag — but instead of writing down our names, we were supposed to fill in the amount of debt we’re struggling under. Although my student loan debt isn’t something I’m used to speaking openly about, and the naïveté with which I mortgaged my future to get a master’s degree in a field where master’s degrees aren’t so much a requirement as a stigma still embarrasses me, I grabbed the Sharpie and wrote, “$40k.” For the first time since I started making my just-barely-feasible loan payments, being honest about my debt brought me relief instead of guilt.
I didn’t expect the People’s Bailout to be such a personal experience for me. Organized by Strike Debt, an Occupy Wall Street offshoot dedicated to fight predatory lending and challenge big banks’ power over the vast majority of Americans through credit card, medical, educational, and mortgage debt, the event was a benefit for the organizations Rolling Jubilee project — an ingenious plan to buy up distressed debt and forgive it. Since debt can be bought for just pennies on the dollar on the secondary market, Strike Debt realized that if they raised $250,000, they could relieve a whopping $5 million of it. To aid in the effort, they planned the People’s Bailout as a live — and live-streamed — telethon, featuring performances by a boatload of entertainers sympathetic to the cause. Although I always supported the cause, I’ll admit that it was those big names (Jeff Mangum’s in particular) that convinced me to make my donation and come down to LPR. … Read More
Watch Steve Buscemi’s PSA on Firefighters Affected by Hurricane Sandy
He may play a powerful, crooked Atlantic City politician on Boardwalk Empire, but Steve Buscemi was once among New York’s most heroic government employees: he was a firefighter. And he hasn’t forgotten his former colleagues. In a PSA to support Friends of Firefighters, an organization founded in the wake of 9/11, he points out that many of the firefighters who risked their lives to keep New Yorkers safe during Hurricane Sandy lived in areas that were themselves destroyed by the storm. “Firefighters are our first responders, and they helped save countless numbers of lives, and property, during the hurricane,” says Buscemi. Click through to watch the video, and visit Friends of Firefighters’ website to donate to their post-Sandy relief efforts. … Read More
