The summer of Charli XCX continues with a bratty new song, “Break the Rules,” the first single off her just-announced sophomore album, Sucker. The album’s out October 21 on Neon Gold/Atlantic.
As we reported at SXSW earlier this year, Charli XCX’s new material leans a little more rock than the stunning electro-pop of her 2013 debut, True Romance. “Break the Rules” manages to translate punk energy into a pop nugget, held together by bass both electronic and instrumental. Though slightly pandering to a young audience, the “I don’t want to go to school” message of “Break the Rules” is bound to make the song an anthem.
