Chris Rock Turned Down Offer to Be First Comedian Headliner of Super Bowl Halftime Show

MTE5NDg0MDU1MTk5MzE5NTY3In a recent talk with Howard Stern, Chris Rock divulged that in 2004, he was asked to perform a standup routine as a headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show; it would have been the first Super Bowl halftime standup performance. He obviously turned the offer down, because, as you’ll recall, audiences were treated that year to Janet Jackson’s nipple (oh, the horrors of a nipple! So horrific the nipple is that we still recall the one time the nipple made an uncensored appearance on live network television!), as opposed to a brief bout of sharp, edgy humor. Recalling his reaction to the offer, Chris Rock said, “There’s nothing for me to do on that show… I coulda sucked!” It’s unlikely that Rock would have sucked, though it’s also hard to imagine smart standup replacing the necessary ostentation of the typical pop routine.
