Cool News: Lake Bell Is Currently Slated to Direct ‘The Emperor’s Children’ Adaptation

This news is exciting: Lake Bell, the writer/director of In a World… and a funny-lady actress who’s never quite got her due — although she’s been wonderful in stuff from the goofy to the sublime — is slated to direct the long-gestating adaptation of formidable, brilliant writer Claire Messud’s should-be-a-classic 2006 novel about class and New Yorkers at the turn of the century (the halcyon days of 2000 – 2001), The Emperor’s Children. Sheesh, I was talking to Messud about a potential adaptation when I interviewed her in 2007, and it’s gone through a variety of permutations since. Currently Bell is attached to a Noah Baumbach-penned script, however, casting is likely to change from the previous murmurs of Keira Knightley, Michelle Williams, Richard Gere, and Eric Bana (although Knightley would still be fine as Marina Thwaite). However, clearly the film has been way too long in the works as the natural name for Bootie, Oscar-nominated Jonah Hill, is now way too old for the role. Who would you cast?
