Disney Channel Introduces Network’s First Same-Sex Couple

The Disney Channel took a pretty big step on Sunday night, though it was overshadowed on the Internet by the post-Grammys/Macklemore/Kendrick whirlwind. On the show Good Luck Charlie, the network introduced its first ever same-sex couple, a pair of lesbian moms who bring their daughter over for a playdate. Unfortunately, the new characters won’t become regulars, because the series finale will air next week.

According to a Disney spokesperson, “This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”

Obviously, Disney Channel has received plenty of backlash from conservative groups like One Million Moms (who you’d think would be happy to see two more moms added to their million, but whatever), but you can read about that over at Defamer.
