Fox Buys Rights to Remake ‘Escape From New York’

John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, the 1981 Kurt Russell-starring, 1997-set, post-apocalyptic film that foreshadowed Manhattan’s descent into a nanny state, has been sold to Fox, which plans to give it a reboot.

It’s not surprising that this is happening, given the remakecrazy state of Hollywood. But what will the producers do with a property set nearly 20 years ago? Will future Manhattan be caricatured as a glorified shopping mall? A labor camp bordered by empty, $100 million per unit high-rises? Will it be about unemployed Millennials marching single file from the skyscrapers of Manhattan and out into the welcoming arms of the Midwest? Who knows, but here’s hoping it stars an aging Kurt Russell, because he’s still kind of a fox.
