Google is in some trouble, maybe, thanks to the nude celebrity photos that were leaked in August. Google is not coming under fire for the leaks themselves, which were originally being blamed on an unproven breach in Apple’s iCloud, but rather for facilitating the proliferation of the photos.
As a letter from Hollywood lawyer Marty Singer puts it, “We are writing concerning Google’s despicable, reprehensible conduct in not only failing to act expeditiously and responsibly to remove the images but in knowingly accommodating, facilitating and perpetuating the unlawful conduct.”
The letter goes on to boldly compare the acts of Google to the recent hideousness shown within the NFL. “Like the NFL, which has turned a blind eye while its players assaulted and victimized women and children, Google has turned a blind eye while its sites repeatedly exploit and victimize these women.”
Further, Google has apparently ignored requests to remove the photos, requests being made under the provisions of the DMCA. I’m curious to see how this one turns out, given that Google didn’t facilitate the leak of the images and instead provided a platform for their dissemination. Regardless of the outcome, the $100 million payment probably wouldn’t hurt Google too much, given that they’re valued to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars. And, surely, the security of all of our photos — nude or otherwise — will still be in question.
