Since it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s Oscars, here’s one to chew on: the Weinstein Company has picked up domestic distribution rights for Grace of Monaco, a new Grace Kelly biopic from director Olivier Dahan (La vie en rose). Nicole Kidman will star as the actress-turned-princess, with Tim Roth playing Prince Rainier III. The Weinsteins are planning a December release, i.e. they’re putting out right in the thick of Serious Oscar Movie season.
Kidman is a three-time Oscar nominee (she won for The Hours), and the Academy just loves giving awards to big stars who convincingly play real people (see Ray, Milk, Erin Brockovich, Lincoln, Monster, Walk the Line, The King’s Speech, Capote, The Last King of Scotland, The Blind Side, The Iron Lady, and, well, The Hours and La vie en rose), so expect Weinstein to basically replicate the strategy that got Michelle Williams nominated for My Week with Marilyn, only this time with another famous current actress playing another iconic actress from the ’50s.
