Slash Film previewed the first official still of Eastern Promises actress Naomi Watts as the late Princess Diana. Formerly titled Caught in Flight, Diana centers on the royal subject’s affair with Dr. Hasnat Kahn, played by Lost‘s Naveen Andrews. The relationship lasted for several years until just before her death in 1997. Previous reports indicated that the film would take a darker approach, depicting the Princess as a “damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair.” If the title changed, perhaps the tone did as well? Kahn was said to be the Princess’ true love, and many said Diana dated Egyptian film producer Dodi Fayed simply to make him jealous. The film picked up a distribution deal at Cannes this week, but a North American release date hasn’t been set at this time. Is Watts a shoo-in for another Oscar, or will the controversy about this little-told story overwhelm her performance?
