Watch out Werner Herzog, the comedians are coming. Documentary Now! (up until now referred to as American Documentary) — created and written by Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Seth Meyers — will premiere on August 20th on IFC. The 30-minute comedy series will use documentary shooting techniques to tell a different fictitious story for each of its six episodes. Already announced to make an appearance is Jack Black, a fresh from Mad Men John Slattery, and a host of other SNL cast members.
The episode descriptions straddle the line of the ridiculous and believable, something of a speciality with Armisen and Hader. Among the “subjects” are an Icelandic film festival celebrating Al Capone, a Mexico drug cartel investigation, and one that sounds clearly like a parody of the Maysles brothers classic Grey Gardens, in which the “documentarians” find a mother and daughter socialite holed up in their crumbling mansion.
In a joint statement the three creators said, “We’re all fans of documentary film and this allows us to use the love of documentary film and combine it with comedy to present a sort of unique take on the form.”
