Werner Herzog has always had a penchant for bringing dramatic flair to already dramatic landscapes. Now, ScreenDaily reports that after wrapping Queen of the Desert (his Gertrude Bell biopic starring Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Damian Lewis, Robert Pattinson), he’ll be starting on a thriller/romance shot in the Bolivian salt flats, starring German actor Veronica Ferres as a scientist involved in a conflict with a corporate bigwig whose company caused a major ecological crisis; the two have to combine forces, however, when a South American supervolcano shows signs of impending eruption (surely this is where the romance occurs as well). Herzog penned the script for the film, titled Salt and Fire, and he’ll produce alongside his Queen of the Desert collaborator, Michael Benaroya, as well as Construction Films’ Nina Maag and Pablo Cruz of Canada Films. Shooting should begin in April, so we’ll probably have to wait until next year to see if Herzog is truly making what sounds like a Hollywood disaster film based on a dish at an fusion restaurant.
By the way, the Bolivian Salt Flats look like this (and could, if we’re lucky, be more fodder for another Herzogian Youtube phenomenon):
