James Franco to Reportedly Star in Film Adaptation of Harmony Korine’s First Novel

After the brilliant and blinding meeting of minds that was Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine and James Franco are reportedly reuniting on a new project. According to the ATL Twins, the creepy, grilled-out brothers who played Franco’s character Alien’s entourage in the aforementioned film, they and Franco will star in an adaptation of Korine’s 1998 debut novel, A Crack Up at the Race Riots. The duo told the New York Post, “[Franco’s] going to be like a KKK leader and we’re gonna be his goons. It’s really strange, in a good way.”

Korine’s book depicts a race war in Florida, in which Vanilla Ice leads the white people and M.C. Hammer leads the black people, while “the Jewish people sit in trees.” Says the Amazon synopsis, “this debut novel from an underground filmmaker uses print, photographs, drawings, news clippings, handwriting, a poem, attempted diagrams, and clip art to enhance the text.”

Sounds… strange, at best. But if anyone can mold this bizarre novel into something remotely watchable, it’s probably Korine (for obvious reasons) and Franco. [via Indiewire]
