Jay-Z Singlehandedly Changed How the RIAA Calculates Album Sales

Good news, everyone! It took the world’s biggest rapper releasing his latest album digitally to do it, but the Recording Industry Association of America is finally factoring digital sales into its gold and platinum certification system, allowing them to count towards certification immediately rather than waiting 30 days to tabulate physical sales. This doesn’t mean much beyond artists being able to go gold/platinum much more quickly — like Jay-Z, whose July 4 Magna Carta Holy Grail release is the whole reason for the RIAA’s policy change in the first place. Early congrats on the platinum, Jay. [via Vulture]
