Rutgers University Now Offers a Course on Beyoncé

Understatement of the year, college is expensive. And with Obama throwing shade at art history majors, having a course on Beyoncé might be the prime example of your parents screaming, “THIS IS WHAT YOU’RE LEARNING ABOUT IN SCHOOL?” But the upcoming Rutgers University class on the pop singer sounds just as ridiculous as any women’s studies class (which is just to say that it’s not ridiculous at all, women’s studies minor up in hurr). The course, “Politicizing Beyoncé,” will analyze race, gender and sexuality using Beyoncé as the lens. And hey, that’s fairly relevant for media consumers/students navigating today’s Bey-drenched landscape. Kevin Alldred, the doctoral student teaching the class, plans on supplementing analysis of Beyoncé’s videos and lyrics with readings from black feminists. So bring on the bell hooks! “Politicizing Beyoncé” represents everything that is good and wonderful about university learning, parents calm bow down. [via CBS News]
