Texas’s Bexar County, containing most of the San Antonio metropolitan area, will debut the newest addition to its public library system, the BiblioTech initiative, this fall. There’s just one twist — the BiblioTech system won’t be circulating print books at all, but e-readers pre-loaded with book titles. The library itself will look like “an Apple store,” with an artist’s rendering showing rows of brand-new iMacs in lieu of bookshelves. Located in the city’s less affluent South Side, the new library is intended to adapt to residents’ needs in the digital age, but by leaving out books altogether, is the BiblioTech system redefining the traditional library or replacing it altogether?
