Last night, during a surprise concert in Los Angeles, Solange debuted a song voicing her sadness and frustration over the police brutality towards black men that has sparked riots around the country. She introduced the track, called “Rise,” saying:

We’re gonna attempt to play a song for the first time that may or may not be on the record, but it probably will be… I wrote this one for Ferguson, for Baltimore…

The track is contemplatively paced, but the lyrics are direct, delivered with dejected clarity over the ambling soul lament: “He is only a man with flesh and bones / He bleeds just like you do.”

The concert was organized by HBO in honor of their upcoming Bessie Smith biopic, Bessie, which stars Queen Latifah as the “Empress of the Blues.”

Solange released her EP, True — which features the breakout hit, “Losing You” — back in 2012, and is now officially in the midst of making her follow-up LP.
