The First Transgender Character in Mainstream Comics is Batgirl’s Roommate

Though LGBT characters were once a rarity in mainstream comics (in fact, any reference to homosexuality was banned by the Comics Code Authority until 1989), they’re finally breaking onto the scene en force. We’ve had gay and lesbian characters (and even marriage proposals!), but now DC Comics is breaking another barrier. In Batgirl #19, Alysia Yeoh confides to her roommate (that’d be Batgirl) that she is a transwoman, making her “the first openly transgender character in a mainstream superhero comic.” Sounds like a step in the right direction.
