With Illinois’ same-sex marriage legislation moving forward amid setbacks, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (aka Modern Family‘s Mitchell) visited Springfield to speak out in favor of equality. His speech was funny, self-deprecating, and heartfelt, shouting out Abraham Lincoln and opining that “marriage equality is the defining civil rights movement of our time.” He also spoke briefly about Tie the Knot, Ferguson and fiance Justin Mikita’s organization that sells bow ties and donates the proceeds to organizations fighting for same-sex marriage.
