It’s hard to think of a more consistently beloved cultural phenomenon than Back to the Future: but even by its recent 30th anniversary, a comprehensive feature-length documentary had not yet been made about the film. Back in Time wasn’t originally supposed to be that documentary — it was a project started with the idea of focusing strictly on the Time Machine. Filmmaker Jason Aron began a Kickstarter campaign for that small project, but, as his new, updated Kickstarter campaign says, “as sometimes happens with an idea that has found its moment, Back in Time has grown in scope as we’ve progressed through production.”
Since, he and his crew have travelled the world to get interviews with Michael J. Fox, writer/director Robert Zemeckis, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Bob Gale, Dean Cundey, and Kevin Pike. The Kickstarter sums up the mission of the doc:
Put simply, it’s the ultimate documentary related to the Back to the Future trilogy. It’s a film that digs deep into what these movies have meant to our culture. It’s not a simple “making of” documentary, but rather one which explores the incredible, lasting resonance of the trilogy through the eyes of cast members and crew of the films, as well as some of the ultimate fans of the trilogy.
