“All this is scratching, ladies and gentleman,” a 17-year-old LL Cool J tells an audience at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. This 1985 set with DJ Cut Creator (who actually gives a little scratching demo) is a fantastic look at early Cool James — before his first album released — and the introduction of hip hop to the masses. The rapper was paid $500 for the show hosted by his mentor, Cornell Clark. The clip contains an LL beatbox demo, some amazing mic drop, little kids breakdancing, and an obligatory message to the children: “Don’t do no drugs, stay away from thugs, and stay in school.” [via Slate]
