The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finalized their list of 104 films contending for original score. Academy members will then vote for five of the most eligible. Musical giants like Alexandre Desplat (nominated for Argo, Rise of the Guardians, Zero Dark Thirty) and Danny Elfman (nominated for Dark Shadows, Frankenweenie, Hitchcock, Men in Black 3, Promised Land) unsurprisingly made the cut, but favorites like Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom — featuring tracks by Benjaimin Britten (with an original score by Desplat) — are missing. There’s a reason. “To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer,” the film academy notes. “Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.” Sad trombone. Anderson has said that, “the Britten music had a huge effect on the whole movie… The movie’s sort of set to it… It is the colour of the movie in a way.”
