The Art of Billy Childish
There was this little window of opportunity in the early aughts where, thanks to the garage-rock revival that helped lay out the welcome mat for bands like the Black Lips, Thee Oh Sees, and The Strange Boys, Billy Childish almost became well-known beyond the legion of devoted fans the unrelenting artist had picked up in his 35+ years making music, paintings, and poetry. While Childish has never actively sought out that spotlight, one admirer, Jack White, tried his damnedest to get the world to pay attention by talking about Childish in interviews, and inviting him to play with White on television; and in true Childish fashion, he wanted nothing to do with it, sparking a feud between the two that was mostly contained to the pages of British magazines. … Read More
30 Seconds With… Katie Goodman
In this weekly feature, WCBS culture critic Jim Taylor shares 30 seconds with the theatre stars and upstarts of NYC. From Broadway to Off-off, Jim tracks down the talent and gets them to spill just enough for our collectively shortened attention spans.
Meet Katie Goodman. She’s foul-mouthed and funny. Hip, smart, and sexy. And her shows sell out. At Joe’s Pub this Friday, and The Triad on 72nd next Wednesday. What exactly does she do? … Read More

For Your Calendar: Hang Out With Mr. Met
This week the New York Mets and New York Yankees start what some are predicting will end up being one of the most disappointing summers of baseball in recent New York history, thanks to injuries, bad trades (seriously, Mets, you trade the reigning Cy Young winner?), and the impending retirement of the one Yankee that even Red Sox fans will tip their caps to, Mariano Rivera. All we can hope for is that there are plenty of unoccupied beach houses in Montauk, so we can escape the boredom usually filled up by our beloved baseball teams. But no matter how dire things look, you know you’ll still be itching to catch a game or two. And starting this week, the hardest working mascot in showbiz, Mr. Met, gets ready to take the field night in and night out. … Read More
30 Seconds With… Amy Herzog
In this weekly feature, WCBS culture critic Jim Taylor shares 30 seconds with the theatre stars and upstarts of NYC. From Broadway to Off-off, Jim tracks down the talent and gets them to spill just enough for our collectively shortened attention spans.
Amy Herzog is one of the hottest new playwrights of our time, but her latest is a real departure. Hitchcock-inspired Belleville is a thriller set in the eponymous Paris neighborhood. Truths and lies and sexual desire share the air with pot smoke and suspense. … Read More

For Your Calendars: ‘Eyes Wide Shut’
You’ve seen Clockwork Orange so many times that you speak fluent
Nadsat, you think Lolita is a better film than Nabokov’s original novel, you know Full Metal Jacket word for word, and you made a low-budget version of an unrealized Napoleon biopic script. Congrats,
you’re a huge Stanley Kubrick fan. And since you’re such a huge fan of the late director, the next week should probably find you camping out at IFC Center, as the great theater on Sixth Avenue presents The Films of Stanley Kubrick, a retrospective of his most well known earlier works, including all the above-mentioned movies, Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory, and many others. Some choices are easier than others (who doesn’t want to see 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen?), but there is one film of his that has divided just about every type of moviegoer since its release in 1999, less than six months after Kubrick’s death.

30 Seconds With… Bebe Neuwirth
In this weekly feature, WCBS culture critic Jim Taylor shares 30 seconds with the theatre stars and upstarts of NYC. From Broadway to Off-off, Jim tracks down the talent and gets them to spill just enough for our collectively shortened attention spans.
We first got to know the multi-talented Bebe Neuwirth as the ice queen Lilith on television’s Cheers and Fraser. Two Emmys later, we got to know her as a Broadway star, nabbing Tony awards for her performances in Sweet Charity and Chicago. Nobody can dance Charity or Velma like Bebe. And she shined in A Chorus Line, Little Me, Damn Yankees, and even The Addams Family. You can get to know her as a cabaret singer this week at 54 Below. A smallish stage, Neuwirth fills it with the songs of Kurt Weill, Tom Waits, and Broadway. But we’ve gotta see her dance. … Read More
