In anticipation of a new release this spring (their first album in two decades), the dudes from Devo are incorporating a very involved color-study poll to determine every aspect, from instrumentation and vocal style to “body covering and brand color.” Tonight, they’ll post “Fresh,” a new song for free download, in conjunction with their performance at the Winter Olympics, allowing fans to see firsthand how well the system works.

Tonight the 2010 Winter Olympics open in Vancouver. To celebrate this, Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad and the city to stage “Vectorial Elevation,” an interactive public art installation that allows people around the world to design huge light sculptures via the web that will transform Vancouver’s skyline. Each evening, 20 robotic searchlights located around English Bay will render the designs in sequence. After, a web page is made for each participant with photos of their design from four cameras located around the city.

When we read that London’s Olympic Stadium would be made out of recycled knives and guns, we were intrigued. Not that they’ve got anything on Vancouver. Recycling will play a large part in this month’s XXI Winter Games; recycled metals from the circuit boards of old computers and cell phones have been melted down and cast into the Olympic medals. No two medals will be the same. How cool is that?
Watch an interview with the designers — Omer Arbel, an internationally acclaimed architect and industrial designer, and Corrine Hunt, a First Nations artist from the Raven Gwa’waina clan — after the jump.

Today at Flavorpill, we tried to imagine Matt Damon as a director — is he just trying to copy Ben? The Julian Casablancas fans around the office wished they lived in LA, where he’ll have a concert residency at the Downtown Palace in November. We thought it was cool that the medals at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver will be made out of melted-down electronic devices. We liked this visual representation of first names in the lyrics of popular songs. We felt sorry for the Google Street View guys (and impressed by CollegeHumor for the second time in two days!). We were transfixed by this set of Weird Eastern European Book Covers. And finally, we were charmed by the idea of Karen O going as a cheerleader for Halloween. Could she be any cuter?
