Incredible, Abstract Photos Taken From the Seat of an Airplane

Julieanne Kost’s Window Seat series, spotted on Faith is Torment, finds the artist snapping photos from the seat of an airplane, resulting in some incredible, abstract images of the world around her. Kost shot over 3,000 aerial artworks from commercial airplane windows over a five-year period, and the experience inspired her to create a book described as a “unique creative seminar.” Head to our gallery to see how Kost observed cloud formations, bodies of water, and the friendly skies in striking ways. … Read More

Crazy Aerial Photos of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

We know, we know. It’s been a week. By this point, you’ve already made your way through all of your turkey leftovers and various pie/casserole situations lurking in your fridge. But we’ve got one final Thanksgiving-related treat for you to enjoy: We just discovered these very cool aerial shots of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade snapped by Brooklyn-based photographer Navid Baraty from 30 stories up in the air. “I grew up watching the parade on Thanksgiving morning with the family and it was my first time seeing it in person,” he told My Modern Met. “It’s crazy how small it all seemed from high above when you’re so used to seeing how giant the balloons look on TV that appear to be towering up into the buildings.” He’s right, the dramatic shift in perspective makes the strange — if familiar — visuals of the balloons floating their way down 6th Avenue even more surreal than it normally is. Beautiful Aerial Shots of Dutch Tulip Fields

Spotted by Coudal, Mishka Henner’s aerial shots of various tulip fields around the Netherlands are real stunners — and a bit of a departure from the kind of work the Belgian artist is best known for. Just last month, he made headlines with a controversial remix of the photos from Robert Frank’s classic series, The Americans and before that, there was No Man’s Land, a 2011 series of images of “what appeared to be women soliciting sex” taken from Google Street View. While less provocative, these latest photos — several of which are part of Spring Bouquet, a temporary downloadable and printable exhibition — are sure to put a smile on your face. Enjoy! … Read More

Photo Gallery: John Crawford's Aerial Nudes

We’ve seen plenty of fantastic photo series featuring nude subjects in our day — from Miru Kim’s self-portraits snapped in desolate places to Ryan McGinley’s images of pretty young things running wild. We’ve also seen lots of great aerial photography. But Aerial Nudes, a project by Auckland-based photographer John Crawford that we spotted thanks to The Curious Brain, manages to marry the two, with results that for reasons that we can’t really explain, we find very amusing — like an easier (and R-rated!) version of those addictive Highlights hidden pictures games from when you were a kid. Click through and let us know what you think of the work in the comments. … Read More

Photo Gallery: Amazing Aerial Photos of Airports

Over the next few days, whether you’re headed somewhere yourself or picking up tired holiday travelers, you’re probably going to find yourself at an airport — maybe you’re even sitting in one right now. While in the past, we’ve celebrated the interiors of some of the world’s best-designed terminals, thanks to X-planation, an intriguing 2008 series by Hubert Branz that we spotted over on My Modern Met, we’re focusing on the dazzling views from above. Sourcing his images from the Internet, the German artist plays the role of Dr. Frankenstein, stitching together incongruous aerial shots and playing around with perspective to create bizarre, MC Escher-like pieces that will make you slightly dizzy if you stare too hard. Consider popping a Dramamine, and then click through to check out a gallery of Branz’s strange, altered images. … Read More

Photo Gallery: Beautiful Aerial Shots by Bernhard Lang

Now that there’s consistently an autumn chill in the air, summer feels like a distant memory. Click through for a slide show of Lang’s shots over water, and if you’d prefer something more wintery, head over to his website for some equally stunning aerial views featuring snow and ice. … Read More

Trompe L’oeil: Fake Aerial Photos of Fake Bustling Squares

At first glance, Adam Magyar’s photography seems fairly straightforward — aerial shots of city squares bustling with civilians. Interesting, to be sure, but something we’ve seen before. However, Magyar’s photographs are neither aerial shots, nor are they of any existing space: instead, the images are created by taking individual shots of people walking from a close range (3 or 4 meters above) and stitching hundreds of these pictures together before zooming out to create fake squares at a fake distance. Over at Magyar’s website, you can zoom in on each faux-aerial image to examine every single person in the photograph at close range, thus allowing each image to be appreciated as a whole and as each and every one of its many parts. Click through to see some of our favorites from Magyar’s series, and be sure to check out his website for more. … Read More

Gallery: Textural Aerial Photography by Stephan Zirwes

If you live and work in a big city, you’re probably always looking for small ways to escape, however momentarily, from the daily grind. We’ve been feeling particularly embedded in city life recently, so when we caught a glimpse of Stephan Zirwes’s amazing aerial photography over at But Does It Float, we were immediately blown away. Zirwes’s photography slips between simple, if beautiful, aerial shots of landscape and something more akin to textural portraits of space, the points of recognition blurring until all the viewer sees is movement and color. So if you’re looking for an escape, you’ve found it: go straight up. Click through to see some of our favorites from his portfolio, and be sure to check out his website for even more (we recommend full screen viewing). … Read More

Photo Gallery: Stunning Aerial Photographs from Around the World

Yann Arthus-Bertrand might be the best known aerial photographer in the world. And for good reason; as a lifelong environmentalist, he takes photos that aren’t just about capturing a beautiful image — they seek to uncover the story behind it. That said, most of his work is very, very pretty, regardless of the ugliness of its subject. He’s just that good.

“I have the impression that I’m photographing life, not landscapes,” he told TED back in 2009. “For me an aerial picture is no different than a close-up portrait. It’s a question of framing and angle. Helicopters are great for that. But I’ve also used planes. Of course, I always have a harness.” Click through to see some of our favorite shots, and to learn more about his inspiring work, check out Arthus-Bertrand’s recent movie, Home. … Read More
