1. Awful (if not surprising) news from Russia: The verdict is in on the Pussy Riot trial, and three members of the feminist punk band and radical arts collective have been found guilty on charges of “hooliganism with intent to incite religious hatred.” We’ll post a more in-depth take on this developing story later today.… Read More

‘Breaking Bad’: The Week’s 5 Biggest Walter White WTF Moments
Although individual episodes are sure to keep us guessing, we know what to expect from Breaking Bad’s final season: Walter White, having killed Gus Fring, finally seizes the power he’s wanted so badly for so long. As creator Vince Gilligan has said, Walt is transforming from embattled hero into full-blooded villain, and these final 16 episodes are sure to make last year’s bomb-planting and kid-poisoning look tame. Since we spent the Season 5 premiere drinking blue cocktails and doing spit-takes over Walt’s ridiculous, audacious, and often reckless swagger, we’ve decided that this year we’ll be rounding up each episode’s biggest Walter White WTF moments. The top five for this week, when Skyler took an unexpected dip in the pool and Hank got a promotion, are after the jump. … Read More

Ranking ‘Breaking Bad’ Characters by Moral Reprehensibility
Breaking Bad is back, and once again we’re thrust into the criminal underworld of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where being a killer is kind of a given, and it’s nothing more than how guilty they feel that separates likable characters from black-hearted villains. With the show promising to complete Walter White’s journey from beaten down science teacher to evil meth kingpin before the end of the season, this seems like a good time to check in on each character’s moral compass. From painfully naïve Walter Jr. to major players in the southwest’s drug trade, we rank Breaking Bad characters from least to most morally reprehensible, after the jump. … Read More

Viacom and AMC React to DirecTV Dispute in Very Different Ways
We know the recent news that DirecTV dropped a handful of networks following a long battle over increased programming fees only affects a small portion of our audience, but we find the dramatic difference in the way that Viacom and AMC are dealing with the situation too interesting not to discuss. The former — which… Read More
‘Mad Men’ Leader Board: Who Had the Season’s Best Lines?
When you get beyond the cocktails and the costumes and the showy emotional breakdowns, what makes any given episode of Mad Men memorable is the dialogue. Matthew Weiner and his staff are particularly wonderful at crafting one-liners — funny quips, penetrating realizations, earth-shattering statements that cause time to stop and personalities to crumble. This season, we’re keeping track of which characters get each episode’s five best lines, assigning points to winners, and posting a cumulative leader board to determine Season 5′s pithiest mad man (or woman). After last night’s finale — which left us appropriately vexed (look for more on that later at Flavorwire) but at least seemed to dispel our fears about Peggy’s departure from the show — we’ve crowned a winner for the season. Click through to find out who came out on top, and let us know if you’re surprised. (Hint: We’re not.) … Read More

The results of last night’s episode — which featured the long-awaited and thoroughly bizarre return of Paul Kinsey, as well as some excellent Don/Joan bonding — are after the jump. … Read More
