Watch the First Real Trailer for ‘The Muppets’

Yes, it’s another trailer for The Muppets. But this one’s different, we promise! It’s not another hilarious movie spoof. Instead, what we get this time around is a much better idea of what we can expect from the actual film, which opens on Thanksgiving Day. The plot is nothing incredibly inventive, but it’s not like that really matters in a Muppet movie anyway, right? A rough synopsis: The Muppets have become Hollywood has-beens and there happens to be an oil deposit sitting underneath the Muppet Theater. They’ll need to raise $10 million in order to save the place from an evil oil baron (Chris Cooper) — which Kermit plans to do by reuniting the old gang and staging “The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever” with some help from their biggest fans (Jason Segel and Amy Adams), a couple from Smalltown, USA. Our only real issue with this adorable trailer is that there’s way too much of Manny from Modern Family — and quite frankly, we’re a little suspicious of the newest Muppet, Walter. The Best Movie Moments of 2010

Plenty of film critics and movie pundits have bemoaned the lack of truly great films in 2010, and while that’s not necessarily a notion that’s without validity, it could also be said that there was a surplus of awfully good movies this year. There may not have been many that really knocked us back, that pulled together ace screenplays, smart direction, and brilliant acting into the full package, the way the best movies do. But there was plenty to entertain, to enlighten, to thrill, to arouse; even some of the year’s lesser movies had an element — a good performance here, a memorable scene there — worth recommending. So with that, let’s take a look at some of the best scenes from this year’s movies — not all of them in films that were great (or, in some cases, even particularly good), but all meriting a spot in our 2010 movie scene mixtape. … Read More

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Music Biopic Casting Decisions

We’re a little bit sensitive about our beloved music icons. So when it comes time to make a biopic and Hollywood studios cast A-list actors to fill their glittery shoes, we’re likely to get defensive about their choices. For instance, a recently announced film about Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia has us hoping for lots of tie-dye, illicit substances, and trippy cinematography — but we won’t allow ourselves to get excited about it until we know who’s playing the hippie hero himself. Our trepidation about the Garcia film got us thinking about notable musician biopic casting decisions of the past. Check out the five best and worst after the jump. … Read More

Rate-A-Trailer: Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia

Amy Adams looks like a normal person. Meryl Streep is kind of silly. And yet after watching the newly-released trailer for Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia, I can’t wait to see the film, which is based in part on the eponymous memoir by Julie Lowell. (Julie had a crappy desk job and no purpose. So she decided to whip up every recipe in  Mastering the Art of French Cooking over the course of a year and blog about it.) My favorite line in the trailer: “I can write a blog. I have thoughts!” … Read More
