In some ways, comic books would seem to be an unlikely subject for nail art — the comics world has a reputation for being nerdy and male-dominated, while nail art is among the girliest of concerns. But this is the 21st century, when everyone reads comics (and gets excited for superhero movies) and even geeks are getting into the nail art craze, the juxtaposition has actually become quite common. In this post, we’ve rounded up some of the most fun and skillful examples we could find, from Marvel and DC superheroes to Sunday funny pages favorites to indie comics with cult followings. Let us know in the comments whether you’ll be trying the sequined Avengers, the stylishly matte Tank Girl, or a different comic-book manicure of your very own. … Read More

Classic Cartoon Characters Transformed into Zombies
Andre De Freitas meshes his photography background with illustration by creating crystal clear, realistic drawings. The technique is well-suited to his Zombie Portraits series, in which he transforms adored cartoons and classic comic-book characters into grim, white-eyed zombies with menacing expressions and festering wounds. Although the eerie collection is the epitome of unsettling — it showcases a demonic Donald Duck and a desolate Charlie Brown — the detailing and color palette De Freitas employs is perfectly apropos for Halloween. See your favorite cartoon metamorphosed into an undead monster after the cut. … Read More
10 Style Icons of the Comic Book World
Comic book characters tend to embody the most petrifying of fashion nightmares, from wearing underwear as outerwear to donning full-body, technicolor spandex suits in broad daylight. Since life within the panels of a comic book tends to be only slightly less sartorially inspiring than being stuck in an ’80s workout video, we think residents of Gotham and Radiant City deserve an extra-hard pat on the back when they bust out runway-worthy looks. Browse our look book of the graphic world’s trendiest style icons after the jump. … Read More
Gay ‘Archie Comics’ Character Scores Monthly Spin-off
About a year ago, Archie Comics stepped boldly into the 21st century, introducing Riverdale’s first gay teen. Recently, we’ve learned more about Kevin Keller in a four-issue mini-series detailing his background and relationship with his military father. Although introducing Kevin may have seemed like a risky move for the retro comics publisher, he’s become so… Read More
Classic Cartoon Characters’ Favorite Musical Artists
You may know that here at Flavorpill we like to postulate about what some of our favorite literary characters might have on their iPods, but we must admit that we have never thought to wonder about what their cartoon counterparts might be jamming out to on their days off. Not so for artist and illustrator Karl Heitmueller, who seems to know what band every single cartoon hero ever has a penchant for. Some of these are spot on – of course Jughead listens to Pavement, and we’re fairly confident that Scooby Doo‘s Fred has never even heard of a band besides Dave Matthews Band – and some are more difficult to parse. Check out Heitmueller’s drawings after the jump, let us know if you agree with his picks, and give us your own predictions! … Read More
Video of the Day: The Archie Movie Trailer
Many thanks to The Daily What, who pointed us in the direction of Cross Eyed Bear Comedy’s awesome fake trailer for Riverdale, a live-action adaptation of the Archie comic book series. While the names and characters are all the same, the Vancouver-based sketch comedy group has given the plotline a Skins-style makeover. Click through to check it out, but be warned: Things start to get really dark just past the two minute mark. … Read More
Meet Kevin Keller: Archie’s First Openly Gay Character
With tomorrow’s release of Veronica #202 the world meets Archie Comics’ first openly gay character: Kevin Keller. According to The Daily Beast, bringing a gay student to Riverdale High School is “a sign of changing attitudes toward homosexuality.” But we’re not so sure. Archie artist Dan Parent told them that Kevin is “well-dressed” not “too flamboyant.” In other words, the kind of gay teen who shouldn’t ruffle the feathers of more conservative Americans — and absolutely nothing like the tiny fringe-wearing illustration that accompanies The Daily Beast’s article, which was done exclusively for them by Donatella Versace. … Read More
