One of our favorite features run by our friends at excellent UK website The Quietus is their regular excerpts from the Rock’s Back Pages archive. They recently exhumed an old article from the NME, wherein Nick Cave, Shane MacGowan, and Mark E. Smith held a “summit” at a south London pub. As it turns out, we happen to own this exact NME – we found it for $1 in a second-hand record shop years ago — and leafing through the article again got us thinking about similar great meetings of the minds that have been caught on film over the years. We’ve put together a gallery of some of our favorites, with grateful acknowledgment for the title and a few of the shots to the wonderful Tumblr Awesome People Hanging Out Together. … Read More

10 of Your Parents’ Songs of the Summer That Still Rock Today
More than any other season, we equate summer with music — outdoor festivals abound, boomboxes blast, and everyone you know has their “essential summer playlist” on heavy rotation. While we definitely have thoughts on the new tracks and indie standbys you should be blasting this summer, we got a bit nostalgic after listening to NPR‘s decades-spanning songs of the summer playlist on repeat this past week. Accordingly, we’ve collected a few “songs of the summer” from the ’60s and ’70s that we think still resonate today, and totally deserve a place on your 2012 summer fun mixtape or a little bit of airtime at your weekend backyard BBQ. Click through to have a listen, and if you’ve got your own ideas on the matter, chime in and add to our list in the comments. … Read More
The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories
1. Apparently Aretha Franklin was the first guest to arrive at Sarah Jessica Parker’s $40,000-a-head Barack Obama fundraising dinner last night, and decided to leave after only 20 minutes. Gawker is calling it “a big diva move,” but given the fact that she’s 70 years old, maybe she was just tired.
2. Tony-nominated… Read More
10 Noteworthy Proto-Feminist Anthems
Today marks the 49th anniversary of teen idol Lesley Gore’s American Bandstand performance of “It’s My Party” — a chart-topper with a catchy, melodramatic, but unmistakably girl’s-eye view. Followed by the similarly spirited “Judy’s Turn To Cry,” “She’s A Fool,” “You Don’t Own Me” and “That’s The Way Boys Are,” Gore’s early singles are often considered as proto-feminist in emphasis. “You Don’t Own Me” is a potent statement in itself — an attitude that was to burgeon later in the decade.
Throughout the centuries, women have accented popular song with resistance, resentment, and outright revolt against oppression. The history of popular music reveals that it’s far more than a man’s, man’s world.
While genres like blues allowed a remarkably femme-centric candor, rebellious notes can be perceived throughout numerous eras — and even within the hit parade. It’s true that often these songs frequently concentrated on romantic themes, but their strong female perspectives, assertiveness, and attitudes denote them as feminist forbearers. Here’s a selection of pioneering vocalists’ music dating from the twenties to the mid-sixties to remind us that empowered girls have been with us for longer than pop culture often cares to remember. … Read More

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office
Today at Flavorpill, we wondered how this clip of Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, and Weird Al covering The Beatles’ “Come Together” on New Year’s Eve in a restaurant on Maui came to be. We started speculating about what Apple might be planning to announce at a media event in New York… Read More

10 Musicians and the Actors Who Were Born to Play Them
Whoever cast Al Pacino as record producer/songwriter/murderer Phil Spector in HBO’s upcoming biopic is a genius. Even though the pair aren’t exactly body doubles (they are both relatively small men), it’s an exciting choice. Pacino has made a career out of playing dark, bizarre, and morally complex characters, from Sonny Wortzik in Dog Day Afternoon and Bobby in The Panic in Needle Park to Angels in America‘s Roy Cohn and Jack Kevorkian. We can’t wait to see what he’ll do with the role of one of pop culture’s greatest contradictions — a man who had the capacity to both make beautiful music and kill. The news of Pacino’s casting got us thinking about other musicians and the actors who were born to play them. Ten of our picks are after the jump. … Read More
10 Classic Lady-on-Lady Musical Collaborations
If you don’t know about one of the year’s best collaborations yet, allow us to make your day: Flavorpill favorites Rye Rye and Robyn have released a duet. “Never Will Be Mine” is actually a remix of Robyn’s 2005 single “Be Mine!,” injected with a shot of Rye Rye’s adrenaline. What’s that old saying? Two scorned women are better than one? Something like that.
The track got us thinking of how few great musical collaborations we’ve seen between two women. While the male-female love duet is a classic, and the menfolk are always hopping onstage together, the all-girl tag team is something of a rarity — perhaps because female musicians are often set up as rivals. After the jump, with the help of Flavorpill’s knowledgeable staff, we’ve collected some of pop’s most memorable lady-on-lady musical collaborations, from Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox to Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, in hopes of inspiring many, many more. … Read More
