20 TV Mean Girls We Secretly Love

From the tough ladies on Game of Thrones and Revenge to the recent additions of sardonic “gal pal” Jessa Johansson (Girls) and James Van Der Beek’s equally self-absorbed BFF Chloe (B—- in Apartment 23), audiences are quite taken with TV’s latest mean girl class. The “B” (of Apt. 23) has even been called “one of the first truly 21st century chicks on TV.” While we don’t endorse girl-on-girl hate in real life, striking that perfect balance of evilness and likability is a difficult thing for a character to do, and we’d like to give a shout out to the women who have done this with aplomb over the years. Click through to see the mean girls we not-so-secretly love, and please share your favorites in the comments! … Read More

Netflix to Release Entire ‘Arrested Development’ Season at Once

It’s really been a whirlwind few months, hasn’t it, Arrested Development fans? After years of skepticism about whether a long-rumored movie would ever really get made, we found out that we’d be getting a film preceded by a fourth season available exclusively on Netflix. That’s all the good news we could ever hope for, but… Read More

Mike Mitchell’s Funny, Twee Caricatures of Pop-Culture Icons

Mike Mitchell paints familiar characters as you’ve never seen them before: There’s Homer Simpson blissfully jumping rope, April from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sucking on a Big Gulp, and A.C. Slater from Saved by the Bell sitting backwards, in his usual fashion, on a toilet. Visually, these witty caricatures straddle the line between adorable and creepy; each portrait has the big, watery eyes of a cartoon and the chubby, flushed cheeks of a child. We’ve collected some of our favorite work by Mitchell, who we discovered via The Mary Sue, after the jump. Readers in the Los Angeles area can see these pieces in person through April 28th at Gallery 1988 Melrose, where you can also buy originals and affordable prints. … Read More

9 Cleverly Hidden ‘Star Wars’ References You Never Noticed

We may still joke about Star Wars being a thing only nerds like, but let’s face it: it’s a part of popular culture that’s become just as mainstream as football and apple pie. That means that the geekiest among us have to work a little harder to make our references that much more obscure, so we can brag to each other about catching them when more casual fans don’t. To make things a little easier for the uninitiated, we’ve rounded up a bunch of tiny Star Wars Easter eggs in video games, movies, and TV shows, from Joss Whedon to American architectural landmarks. Impress your dorky friends with the knowledge you’ll gain after the jump. … Read More

The Best Pop-Culture ‘Game of Thrones’ Mash-Ups

Yesterday brought us George R.R. Martin fans a little gift: some exciting new footage from the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. But with the premiere still over a month away, we thought you could probably use something more to hold you over until the new episodes begin and winter finally comes. Like Ben Wyatt in Parks and Recreation claimed, the show really is a “crossover hit,” and appearing in dozens of hilarious online mash-ups with other pop-culture genres and franchises. We’ve compiled some of the best for diehard fans after the jump. If you found one that we missed, let us know in the comments! … Read More

10 Great TV Crossover Episodes

Television crossover events, like this week’s buzzed-about meeting between Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, are by nature complicated. Sending the characters of a lesser-known series into a more established hit (or vice versa) is a time-honored move for studios, but making the grammar of two shows mesh isn’t always easy. Take the notorious episode of The Simpsons that crossed over with The Critic, a FOX-arranged partnership that Simpsons creator Matt Groening considered enough of an imposition on his creation that he removed his name from the credits in protest. But at their best, TV crossovers encapsulate that marvelous feeling you get when two pieces of pop culture wink at each other from across the room. When they’re done well, crossover episodes are tiny links in the sprawling fictional universe of television, from Kramer’s turn on Mad About You to Detective Munch’s appearance on Arrested Development. We count down ten great crossover television episodes, after the jump. … Read More

TV’s 10 Greatest Co-Star Reunions

Fellow TV geeks, we have a future of several possibly great former co-star reunions ahead of us. Namely, we can look forward to West Wing alums Rob Lowe and Bradley Whitford on Parks and Rec in March (although it’s yet to be confirmed the two will actually cross paths), David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow on Web Therapy this summer, and even John Goodman and Roseanne Barr on her forthcoming show Downwardly Mobile. And if you’re looking for just one reason to justify Are You There, Chelsea?, it’s the Laura Prepon/Wilmer Valderrama  hook-up expected later this month. So while you wait just a short while longer for the That ’70s Show Season 3 faux Fez-Donna date to become a reality, allow us to offer some healthy distraction as we reminisce about memorable co-star reunions in TV history. Exploitative ratings gimmick, genius, or both? We’ll let you be the judge, and as always, please share your personal favorites in the comments. … Read More

Dramatic Prints of Familiar TV Locations

That should explain the shock of recognition you’ll feel as you scroll through this selection of pieces from Tim Doyle‘s Unreal Estate show, which finds the illustrator and print-maker revisiting some unforgettable small-screen sets in a series of prints. See Arrested Development‘s infamous banana stand, the diner where Seinfeld‘s characters were regulars, and Moe’s bar from The Simpsons in a brand-new way after the jump. If you’re in the Bay Area, be sure to check out the exhibition in person, at San Francisco’s Spoke Art, between February 2nd and 23rd. … Read More
