Exclusive Infographic: Which One-Hit Wonder Are You?

Ah, the one-hit wonder. It’s what all newly successful Billboard Hot 100 artists fear most — right, Carly Rae Jepsen? Well, maybe it’s too soon to predict the “Call Me Maybe” singer’s fate, but we wouldn’t be surprised if she eventually joins the forgotten ranks of Aqua and Lou Bega — y’know, after she’s done jamming with The Roots and whatnot. Did you know that some music industry folks consider Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin to be one-hit wonders? They each only had one song on the Top 40 charts, which technically qualifies them. Crazy stuff. Anyway, after the jump, we took a few of the best-selling one-hit wonders of all time and made a silly little flowchart to determine the hit that suits you best. … Read More

Awesome Infographics: YA Cover Art Trends in 2011

We recently came across Uncovering YA Covers, an amazing series of infographics drawn up by YA author Kate Hart about the trends in YA cover art in 2011, and we have to admit, we were discouraged but not unsurprised at some of the things she found. Looking at The Elevensies and the Goodreads list of 2011 YA releases, Hart analyzed over 600 book covers for a variety of criteria — color, minority representation, the way girls are portrayed (headless, dead, ready for prom) — and turned her findings into these fun charts. Click through to school yourself on the YA book cover trends (so much filigree, as it turns out), and let us know what you think in the comments! … Read More

Awesome Infographic: Orwell vs. Huxley

Although 1984 and Brave New World are hardly the only great dystopian novels of the 20th century (hi there, Margaret Atwood), George Orwell and Aldous Huxley may well have shaped most English-language readers’ nightmare visions of the future. So it makes sense to contrast Orwell’s world of constant war and government thought control with Huxley’s… Read More

A Visual Breakdown of the Occupy Wall Street Movement

There are a lot of stereotypes floating around about the people who support the Occupy Wall Street movement, such as, they’re all a bunch of extreme leftist hippies or angry, unemployed college grads. Using online survey data compiled by business intelligence analyst Harrison Schultz and Professor Hector R. Cordero-Guzman from the School of Public Affairs at Baruch College, Fast Company has created an infographic that looks at the age, gender, race, political affiliation, educational background, and income of recent visitors to occupywallst.org — which is the closest thing the self-described leaderless resistance movement has to an official website. Click through to examine their somewhat surprising findings about its virtual supporters. … Read More
