Following the huge viral success of his single “Fuck You!,” Cee Lo Green is poised for the next step toward superstardom with his third solo album, The Lady Killer.
The Atlanta soul singer has been in the spotlight many times, from his early work with Goodie Mob to collaborations with everyone from Outkast to TLC — and most notably, topping the charts with Gnarls Barkley, his project with Danger Mouse — but with The Lady Killer, Green is set to finally have his name on everybody’s lips, instead of just having his voice in their ears.
We are total Gleeks. And while we love hearing top ten hits in four-part harmony every week, our favorite episodes are those that pay tribute to particular pop artists. After the wildly popular Madonna episode (and confirmation of a followup), and in anticipation of tonight’s Lady Gaga spectacular, we started thinking about which indie artists we’d most like to see covered by the McKinley High School Glee Club. Is it so crazy to hope that Puck sports an ironic mustache or Rachel Berry trades in her patterned sweaters for thick-rimmed glasses? We don’t think so.
In addition to the bigwigs (Blonde Redhead/Band of Horses) and mainstays (Woods/The Antlers), this week’s mix also features bands that have been under the radar because they’re either from across the Atlantic (Mystery Jets/Pony Pony Run Run) or just completely new to us. Get familiar with the next ten, and be sure to Right click + Save As the songs you like after the jump.
So maybe the origins of today’s national stoner holiday aren’t all that flashy (you have a group of kids from San Rafael High School who called themselves “the Waldos” and are now in their fifties to thank), but it still deserves a decent playlist. If you plan on inviting some friends over after work to “brainstorm”, check out our thirteen selections after the jump to avoid harshing anyone’s buzz. Enjoy!
You might have seen Flavorwire’s coverage of Badu’s JFK assassination-inspired video for “Window Seat,” which also featured a public strip-down. While she undoubtedly won the week in terms of buzz, there are still plenty of other unofficial awards to be claimed: Best Defense Of Dancing In A Police State (Janelle Monae), Most Beautiful Nature Imagery That Will Give You The Spins (Band of Horses), and Most Obvious Exploitation Of Canine Love For Peanut Butter (Signals). We’ve all been through it. Whether you’re the dumper or the dumpee, breaking up sucks — especially this time of year. After your friends have all gone home and that bottle of bourbon is definitely empty, at least music is there to ease your aching heart. Since we have officially exited the aughts, we figured we’d save you the trouble and compile a list of the top ten break-up songs from the past decade. So, without further ado, a five stages of grief-inspired mix, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Please use in moderation.
This week, we came across a post on the Guardian‘s music blog entitled Reader Recommended: Songs named after Towns. Inspired, we decided to compile our own list of songs named after US towns. Gosh, we’re clever. Although the list could have included hundreds of tunes, we had to be selective — you will not find overplayed tracks like “New York, New York” and “Viva Las Vegas” on this list. Sorry. As always, feel free to add to our list in the comments. Read More »
