If anyone other than Chuck Klosterman had attempted to get Eating the Dinosaur published, they would have failed. This inevitable rejection would not be the fault of the writer, but of two distinct realities that solidify Klosterman’s place in the cultural canon: the continued existence of Chuck Klosterman himself, and of the multitude of people a) who blog for free about whatever they want and b) who blog for money about whatever their editors want. It is because Klosterman doesn’t blog, and because everyone else does, that he got this book published. He established his persona pre-blog and remains that way, possibly making him the only living young writer who maintains that kind of purity.
The world of indie media companies is a small, varied, and at times cutthroat one. But that doesn’t mean we can’t all still be friends, and you know, help each other and learn from one another. In that great spirit of Kumbaya, Flavorpill organized an NYC media gathering, inviting top editors, founders, and publishers from indie publications to hang out, drink, grill, and chill.
With newspapers and glossies folding almost daily, trad-media journalists are quickly being forced to adapt or die (“Why didn’t I listen to Arianna when I had the chance?!”). The clip after the jump, however, gives us great hope that even the stodgiest of print dinosaurs can flourish in the blogosophere. Or not. (Also, this is pretty much how we felt when we tried signing our aunt up for Facebook.) Copy! Read More »
Having seemingly mastered Twitter, is Diddy the new hip-hop king of the Internets? Prolific blogger Kanye has kept off the status-update site, and denounced http://twitter.com/kanyewest as fake late last year. Vulture thinks this signals a changing of the guard, making Kanye’s blog obsolete. But really, we find Diddy’s tweets to be fairly interchangeable with most of Kanye’s blog posts. Let’s look at a few of each. We’ll reveal which are Kanye and which are Diddy, after the jump.

- Arianna Huffington, telling Jon Stewart on last night’s Daily Show about one of the silver lining consequences of the recession — more blogging!
“I can’t believe that you just put a positive spin on the economic crisis,” Stewart replied during their lively yet substantial back-and-forth about the merits of blogging. Stewart gave Huffington a hard time, comparing the spread of blogs to an STD and badgering her about whether or not it is waste of people’s time. She fought back, highlighting the importance of intimate communication about all subjects, poetically claiming that blogging is like “a first draft of history” — a line that we’ll be sure to use on our parents the next time they moan about the fact that we didn’t pursue a career in medicine.
The interview is full of quips with substance, as Stewart one-on-ones usually are, but you can probably guess why we like this one so much — we’ve got our own not so tiny stake in the debate. And while we realize Huffington was just promoting her new book —The Huffington Post Guide to Blogging — we are all about a little solidarity.
