About this time last year, we ran an overview of some of the more interesting music videos of 2010, videos that would never have been shown on MTV, but nevertheless represented some fascinating and innovative filmmaking. At the time, we noted that “now that we get so much of our entertainment online, and MTV barely airs music videos anymore, the rules have changed.” In 2011, that’s more apparent than ever — and so, we’ve repeated the dose this year, looking at everything from a short film that barely features and music at all to a video that features men with heads for penises. Some of these are raunchy, some of them are disturbing, and some are just plain weird — but they’re all noteworthy, and they all make for interesting viewing. (And, just in case it’s not clear that a post entitled “The Year In NSFW Music Videos” is NSFW… well, it is. So don’t blame us if your boss catches you watching these.) Read More »
The first album from Mister Heavenly, Out of Love, officially dropped this week, heralding the official arrival of Sup Pop’s newest indie rock supergroup. Now, though a supergroup, especially in the obsessive fan atmosphere of indie rock, always sounds like a good idea — take four musicians from great bands and they’re obviously make a great band, right? Right — they can run the gamut from wonderful to acceptable to underwhelming to just plain bad. However, since we’ve been digging Mister Heavenly’s new release these past few days, we’ve been inspired to chronicle some of the best indie rock all-star teams in recent history, from the very large and very famous to the more obscure. Click through to see some of our favorites, and let us know which of yours we’ve missed in the comments.
With a score by Broken Social Scene, a title that references a Sonic Youth album, and a main character named Thurston, Mike Goldbach’s Daydream Nation could be one of those movies that’s trying to hard to appeal to the hipster demographic. Luckily, this dramedy, which stars Kat Dennings, Josh Lucas, Reese Thompson looks like it could be something special. From the voice over in the trailer we learn that our teen protagonist is having great sex with her teacher, but from the looks of it, their affair doesn’t last, and she ends up with a guy closer to her own age. Josh Lucas cries about it, and then bleaches his hair. There’s also a serial killer involved. Check it out after the jump.
Featuring new compositions and tracks by Beck, Broken Social Scene, and Metric, the soundtrack to new Michael Cera flick Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is almost as enticing as the film itself.
Beck penned the tracks for fictional band Sex Bob-Omb, which features Cera’s character on bass, while BSS took on the same duties for another of the film’s made-up groups, Crash and the Boys. Highlights include Metric’s “Black Sheep” and Beck’s own ballad to the movie’s heroine, “Ramona,” while old-school tracks from the Rolling Stones and T.Rex add classic-rock cred.

Previously the term “wanderlust” evoked one image in our mind: mushrooms. And, Bjork’s amazing 3-D music video for the track “Wanderlust” directed by Encyclopedia Pictura… which absolutely involved mushrooms. But now it’s our favorite new music festival, too. According to its website, Wanderlust is a new kind of fest that marries yoga and rock n’ roll. Situated in Lake Tahoe in a lush part of Northern California, there were tons of opportunities for eating fruit, shopping for hippie accessories, and going on a hike or two in spite of the surprisingly sweltering weather.
