We hate to say it, but it looks like the eight month delay (Eight months! Drat you Warner Bros.) may have been a good idea — Harry Potter dominated the weekend, with the largest world-wide opening of any film. Ever. And some of that money was ours. This week’s other newby, (500) Days of Summer debuted in twelfth place, which may not make our list, but considering that it only opened in 27 locations and is expanding, we expect to see it up here very soon. We’re so happy for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Read More »
To absolutely no one’s surprise, Bruno opened in the number one slot this weekend, but signs may not be so good for its future. Transformers:RotF fell to third place under the consistent Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. The only other new offering of the week, I Love You, Beth Cooper, came in a weak seventh place. Sadly, we didn’t even know it had come out yet. Read More »

Like dentists and their Trident, we at Flavorpill want to bring you authoritative recommendations, but sometimes we can’t quite stick the landing when it comes to consensus. In Four Out of 5, we spotlight the weekend’s most worthy new movie release with four reasons why you should see it… and one why you shouldn’t. This week’s selection: Humpday, which should still be fresh in your mind from this morning’s interview with director Lynn Shelton. Read More »

As a huge Diablo Cody fan, I’ve been waiting to see the trailer for this horror flick — which like Juno, is a collaboration with Jason Reitman — for a long time. Which is not to say that I’m giving it a free pass. I got my hands on the script last fall, and I wasn’t so impressed with what I read. As Cody disciples know, her language can be a bit… heavy-handed at times. Plus, I wasn’t sure if I could buy that the same woman who gave us a movie scored by Kimya Dawson could morph into a horror scribe. Read More »

Amid all the news of Michael Jackson’s death last week came word that a scene mentioning the former King of Pop was removed from Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming comedy, Bruno. BBC News got out the first review of the film (which opens in the US on July 10th) saying that, “There are some very funny moments, including a brilliant scene where, while trying to bring about peace in the Middle East, two rival camps have to explain to Bruno that Hamas and hummus are not the same thing — but both agree at the same time that hummus is a good thing.” Read More »
Kanye West and Spike Jonze made a short film together. According to Videogum, the film, which premiered yesterday at the LA Film Festival, was originally meant to be a music video for 808′s & Heartbreak. And then somehow it became all about a day in the life of Kanye — VIP rooms, beautiful women, and bathroom vomit scenes. [Insert lame Where The Wild Things Are joke here.] Read More »
Today at Flavorpill, we couldn’t believe that Chastity Bono is becoming a dude and is already being referred to in the press as a “he”. We wondered what a Michael Moore vampire movie would look like. We took a virtual walk along the High Line, thanks to Inhabitat’s exlcusive video. We reconsidered a career as a William Morris agent. We decided that something about Alexa Chung reminds us of Angela Chase — but not necessarily in a good way. We were sad to hear that My Name Is Earl has officially been marked DNR. We actually felt sorry for Bret Michaels. We’re sure it will pass. We were on Team Choire. We laughed at this piece of news about that Salinger sequel guy. And finally, we stared at the first picture from the new season of Mad Men. Because. We. Can’t. Wait.
