The Best and Worst of Last Night’s ‘SNL’ with Cameron Diaz

Trailers for the Annie remake featuring a tarted-up Cameron Diaz as the mean Miss Hannigan are cringeworthy (highlighting some of the problems actresses over 40 face), but Diaz has proven to be a gifted comedian so perhaps she stands a chance. It was disappointing to see that SNL followed suit by shoving her into a few tight skirts and some lingerie for tonight’s episode, but Diaz’s energy and professionalism steal the spotlight. This is her first time on the Studio 8H stage since 2005 (she’s hosted three times before), but Diaz doesn’t miss a beat. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars bring the funk in a flashy set. See how it all went down, below. … Read More

Who Should Play Morrissey in the New Biopic?

Since the news broke that the team behind the Ian Curtis/Joy Division film Control may be working on another music biopic of the formidable Steven Patrick Morrissey, our absolute favorite sex idiot of music, the man behind The Smiths and immortal lyricist responsible for sulks like, “I am human and I need to be loved/ Just like anyone else does,” we haven’t been able to stop arguing about which actors out there would be fit to stuff some flowers into their back pocket while dancing. … Read More

Does It Really Matter That Red Hot Chili Peppers Didn’t Play Live at the Super Bowl?

There is probably a very specific kind of person who is legitimately upset that the members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers did not play their own instruments during their performance with Bruno Mars at Sunday night’s Super Bowl halftime show. I’m not sure who that person is, exactly, because I’m not sure who, in 2014, consider Red Hot Chili Peppers to be on the cutting edge of rock music. But that person is upset this week, because they could tell that the band were doing little less than performing the Rock Band version of “Give It Away,” pretending to play musical instruments along with a prerecorded track. … Read More

Flavorwire’s Official 2014 Super Bowl Halftime Show Drinking Game

Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to take the Super Bowl halftime stage later today. Both acts have a shared funk vibe, so the pairing isn’t as crazy as it initially sounds. Indeed, Mars is an unorthodox choice for a headliner being a relatively new artist, but the Hawaiian-born singer has been performing since he was a child and comes from a musical family. Having a truckload of hit singles and a Grammy also helps. The Red Hot Chili Peppers will surely provide the rougher-around-the-edges, rock yang to Mars’ pop music yin. It could be disastrous, or we could be pleasantly surprised. Either way, there’s alcohol to help us through it! Play along with our drinking game, below. … Read More

Ranking the MTV VMA Performances from Best to Worst

Last night saw the MTV Video Music Awards come to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The best thing about the night was clearly Taylor Swift telling One Direction to “Shut the fuck up,” but beyond that, the show was, as ever, about the performances — all the post-event hysteria has been about Miley Cyrus’s… interesting rendition of “We Can’t Stop,” but there were plenty of other notable moments, including an N*Sync reunion and Kanye West performing “Blood on the Leaves.” So… from best to worst, here’s how we saw the evening’s performances. … Read More

The Best and Worst of Last Night’s ‘SNL’ With Bruno Mars

Turns out Bruno Mars was just as confused as we were about why he was asked to host last night’s SNL — in his monologue, he immediately burst into song (a good move) to croon about how nervous he was about the gig and how much he hoped he could be like Justin Timberlake. But he quickly stiffened his resolve with a good old “I can do this” breakdown. And hey — turns out he was right. Though the show as a whole was up and down, we thought Mars held up his end of the bargain pretty darn well. Click through to watch the best and worst sketches of the night, and let us know if you agree in the comments! … Read More
