Sorry, But There’s One More ‘Call Me Maybe’ Video You Need to See

We’re all entitled to a bit of Friday frivolity, right, readers? Well, here’s ours. Yes, it’s another “Call Me Maybe” video — but hey, don’t click away yet, because it may well be the funniest one we’ve seen. Bearded YouTube jokester Steve Kardynal logs into Chatroulette (yes, it still exists) wearing a bikini, starts lip syncing “Call Me Maybe” with a coy smile, and elicits reactions that are even more entertaining than his frequent costume changes. There are plenty of incredulous and horrified looks, of course, but our favorites are the people who start singing along. Click through for Carly Rae Jepsen as you’ve never seen her before. … Read More

1. Charlie Sheen has pledged to donate at least $1 million of profits from his new TV show Anger Management to the USO. It might be a calculated move in the name of image rehab, but at least it’s going to benefit a lot of American troops. [via ABC News]

You Know You Love It: ‘Game of Thrones’ as a Romantic Comedy

It’s the perfect set-up: Brienne is the ugly duckling with some serious emotional walls and a crush on her gay best friend, Jaime is the most handsome guy in school — er, Westeros — who’s trapped in an unhealthy relationship. They both love fighting, and slowly they realize that they might just love… each other. At least, that’s the way that YouTube user twinvortex sees it, and we can’t say we hate the idea — at the very least, we laughed out loud when we watched this trailer for a rom-com version Game of Thrones. Plus, the trailer features everyone’s favorite song of the teeny-bopping summer, “Call Me Maybe.” Not that any of these characters have phones, but somehow “Send Me a Raven Maybe” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. … Read More

Is “Somebody That I Used to Know” the Inevitable Song of the Summer?

It seems like as soon as temperatures begin to top 70 degrees, everyone’s got an opinion on what the song of the summer should be — Flavorpill included. And while no one loves a good critical conversation (or backyard bar argument) more than us, we’re also curious about which track is actually getting… Read More

Click through to watch, and let us know if we missed your favorite in the comments. But not if it’s the James Franco one. … Read More

Pop for Skeptics #1: Teenage Magic

With global warming, political unrest, and a cratered international economy serving as the shaky pillars of today’s world, we need pop music now more than ever. On one hand, you could argue that maybe pop music serves to distract us from the wars politicians are waging on civilians, but on the other, consider this: Pop has always been, even and especially with its most capitalist of intentions, escapism. As hopeless headlines continue to paint dark horizons for us, pop is one of the few lights to shine through and inspire whimsy. Even the harshest skeptic has no choice but to relent and give into the genre. That’s why we present Pop For Skeptics, a regular Flavorwire column committed to curating and commenting on the latest and greatest ear candy from the US and around the world.

In these tough times, one of the latest incarnations of pop to catch on is the sparkling revival of what we call “teenage magic.” While we experience teenage magic differently, at its heart, the phenomenon is unequivocally premised in the wide-eyed perceptions we have of the world around us. In trying to figure out how things worked as kids, we colored in logical blanks with wild speculation. More than that, at that age, only our points of view — no matter how wrong and misguided — mattered. We were suns in our solar system and everyone else was asteroids; we were brats, man. … Read More
