Comic book properties are constantly being licensed in the entertainment world, but some of the most interesting transformations are still happening in print. Artists, designers, filmmakers, and writers are pushing the boundaries of the medium by exploring the structural characteristics of comic books, narrative innovations, the dynamic integration of word and image, and complex subjects. We took a look at 10 different experimental comics, inspired by a tactile book for the blind that we spotted on Co.Design (featured after the jump). See how a once niche product has gradually shifted to an experimental medium. … Read More

‘Rhett Butler: The Video Game’ and Other Awesome Literary Cartoons by Tom Gauld
Scottish cartoonist and illustrator Tom Gauld is pretty brilliant. His work, like last year’s Goliath, is reliably insightful and literary, with a wryly sweet bent. His newest collection, You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, which hits shelves in the US today, is just as dark and funny — especially if you like books, as Gauld does. Some of the best comics in the collection are the bookish ones, taking chummy digs at everyone from Martin Amis to the Brontës to “proper literature.” After the jump, laugh and feel literary at the same time with a few of his best book-themed comic strips, and then be sure to head on over to his website to check out more of his work. … Read More
Spooky Background Paintings from ‘Scooby-Doo’
Former Disney and Hanna-Barbera artist Walt Peregoy has contributed his background paintings to numerous successful pictures, including the Mouse House’s 1959 classic movie, Sleeping Beauty. He was also an artist on multiple Scooby-Doo episodes and specials — particularly the spooky ones that found the motley gang in eerie houses battling invisible foes. Seeing his incredible, gothic-style artwork for the cartoon mystery show without the boldly colored figures is surprisingly poetic. Isolated, they are haunting, abandoned towns, mansions, and carnivals — snapshots of a bygone era. Visit Peregoy’s beautiful background paintings, below. Find more on Parkour. … Read More

Funny Cartoons Taking Over the Pages of Harlequin Novels
Los Angeles-based cartoonist and illustrator Jay Howell — creator of popular zine Punks Git Cut — was working on an animated series called The Forest City Rockers that caught the attention of Fox. They recruited him to create art for their new show Bob’s Burgers, about a family that runs a hamburger joint next to a crematorium. Since then he’s been developing a pilot for Nickelodeon, while also working on a new zine called Dark Wave. Today, however, it’s his drawings on Harlequin novels that got us excited.
The cartoon-style drawings are set on the title pages of the mawkish best sellers, conceptualizing the art-text relationship in funny ways. “I was in a thrift store maybe six months ago and I noticed that the titles in these books were just so funny,” Howell said in a recent interview. ”I was doing all these drawings about people reading books with funny titles, [because] I really like making up fake names and fake book titles. Then I saw those books, and it was just so perfect.” Click through to see Howell’s lanky and monstrous characters take over the pages of Harlequin novels in our gallery below. … Read More
10 of the Greatest Cartoons of All Time
Animation historian Jerry Beck penned a 1994 book titled The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected By 1,000 Animation Professionals. We probably don’t need to tell you what the tome entails, but we can tell you that thanks to Mubi, we’ve uncovered the list of animated shorts in Beck’s book online. Almost all of the films are under 30 minutes long, were made in North America, and were released before 1960 (minus a handful). We’ve combed through Beck’s best-of list and highlighted a few gems past the break. A jazz icon, Edgar Allan Poe, and a famous Japanese monster all make an appearance. Grab your cereal bowl, fake like it’s Saturday morning, and tell us what cartoon greats win you over in the comments below. … Read More
Funny Cartoon-Inspired Street Art
German artist Timm Schneider proves that you don’t need spray-paint and stencils to create interesting street art. Armed with styrofoam balls that have been fashioned into googly eyes, the artist transforms random objects and sidewalk architecture like trash cans, recycling bins, and metal poles into imaginative and expressive cartoon characters. Schneider’s creatures have been thrust into some pretty silly — and unfortunate — situations. Click through to see more of Schneider’s works. … Read More
Glenn Beck to Become Cartoon Character?
Well, he’s already pretty cartoonish — the cape, the chalkboard, the tears, the general paranoid hysteria. But The Wrap reports that Glenn Beck may be delving even further into the realm of fantasy; his new, $9.95/month, subscription-based Internet TV station is developing an animated comedy series with the… Read More
