‘Parks and Recreation’ Characters As Comic Book Heroes

Well, here’s an artist after our own heart: LA-based self-described illustrator, printmaker, and “fun-junkie” Vicky Trochez (aka “Vicktrola”) has gone and turned the characters from Parks and Recreation into the comic book heroes of the Justice League. “After doing a quick sketch of Leslie Knope as the Caped Crusader’s side kick,” she explains at the beginning of the online portfolio, “I decided to go all in and transform the rest of the Parks and Recreation cast into the rest of the Justice League.” The results are, to say the least, glorious. Check out Trochez’s full gallery after the jump, and then hop over to her website to buy a print or two (you know you want to). … Read More

Flavorwire’s Flick of the Week: ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Is the Film of the Year

Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty is a great American film: complicated, nuanced, searching, piercing, difficult — and yet thrilling and satisfying all the same. In dramatizing the nine-year manhunt for Osama bin Laden, Bigelow examines some of the most pressing and important questions of our time; she’s asking what it is to be a “post 9/11″ American, but it’s a question she asks without actually, y’know, asking it. As with her Hurt Locker, a film that grows only more powerful and prescient, she’s patently uninterested in the pedantic. It is a film full of talk: in meetings, in interrogations, in negotiations. But she’ll do nothing so gauche as telling us what to think. The fully engaged audience gleans characterization through action, message through montage, and draws its own conclusions. … Read More

Flavorwire’s Guide to Indie Flicks to See in September

September is kind of a peculiar month for movies. Summer blockbuster season has faded, and though the Oscar hopefuls are rolling out at the prestige fall festivals (Toronto, Venice, Telluride), most of them won’t hit theaters until at least October, to accommodate the notoriously short memories of Academy voters. So it’s a perfect month to check out some of the mid-level indies (many of them first seen at Sundance and other, earlier fests) that will hit arthouses this month; we’ve got some recommendations for you after the jump. … Read More

The Best Married Comedy Power Couples

Have you heard the news? This past weekend, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt had a baby boy. Of course, imagining Chris Pratt with anyone other than Aubrey Plaza seems a little wrong (like most, we have trouble grappling with the fact that Parks and Recreation isn’t real life), but we trust that these two will raise one hell of a funny kid. Inspired by this silly couple, we’ve gathered a list of the best married comedy power duos (in no particular order) — because, well, those still mourning Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s relationship should probably just celebrate these worthy couples instead. Check ‘em out after the jump, and hit the comments to let us know which silly married team is your all-time favorite. … Read More
