Enter to Win a Custom Tote Bag from Bushmills and ACL

Bushmills has been going all out with its Since Way Back program, partnering with everyone from Bon Iver and Chromeo to Elijah Wood in celebration of strong friendships and longlasting traditions. As part of the campaign, the whiskey maker also teamed with style arbiter Michael Williams of A Continuous Lean. to create a custom-designed tote bag sold both through ACL and the Billy Reid store in NYC, with proceeds going to the Red Cross Tornado Relief Fund. As could be expected from such a collab, the bags sold out in a snap, but you still have a chance to get one — if you act fast. Head to Bushmills’ Facebook page by the end of the day today to enter to win one of four custom totes. If you win the grand prize, yours will even be filled with items selected by Williams himself. … Read More

12 Great Musical Performances from Yo Gabba Gabba

Indie rock and children’s television came together this morning, when The Flaming Lips performed on the ground-breaking Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba. In its three seasons, the series has featured some surprisingly hip bands. For one of the show’s segments called “The Super Music Friends Show,” bands usually compose a song specifically for the series, in part because the lyrics to their hits may not be appropriate. (Fun fact: The Killers had to be introduced as “Brandon, Ronnie, Mark and Dave.”) To celebrate yet another awesome guest spot — and because even the biggest music fans might have missed them when they aired — we’ve compiled 12 of our favorite performances from the wacky kids show so far. … Read More

Musicians with PhDs Who Might Surprise You

Academia and the music industry don’t seem like particularly compatible institutions. The former moves glacially slowly, the second feeds on an internet-stoked buzz cycle. Academics prize well-thought out hypotheses while musicians are all about, um, everything but that. But in spite of their differences, there are a whole host of musicians with higher degrees. Check out our list after the jump. … Read More

Five Bands from this Decade and Their ’80s Counterparts

Arrested Development (the TV show) had one of its best lines in mid-2004, when perennial alcoholic Lindsay Fünke made this offhand remark about fashion: “It’s the 21st century. We should be dressing like the ’80s.” It was ironic at the time, but now, at the tail end of 2009, after surviving an age that resurrected high-waisted jeans, we’ve come to realize she was dead right. Fashion wasn’t the only thing the first decade of the 21st century lifted wholesale from the ’80s.

Presented here are five blatant examples of bands who have begged, borrowed, or stolen from their ’80s predecessors. In the comments, let us know what ’90s sounds will see a revival in the next decade. We’re putting our money on grunge and Limp Bizkit-style nu metal. … Read More

Chromeo’s 10 Best Song Picks of 2009

New York duo Chromeo know how to put together a mix. Their recent entry to the famed DJ-Kicks compilation series featured members Patrick Gemayel (P-Thugg) and David Macklovitch’s (Dave 1) favorite “leather pants” tracks and sex-soaked funk from from the seventies and eighties. But they’re equally attuned to the best of 2009. After the jump, check out videos and downloads of Dave 1′s favorite tracks of the… Read More
