The Disturbing Origins of 10 Famous Fairy Tales

If you know anything about us, you should know this: we’re suckers for a good story. Luckily, Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: A New English Version, edited by fabulist extraordinaire Philip Pullman and on shelves today, is packed with them, complete with smart commentary and playful prose. While reading, we were struck by how many of our most pervasive stories can be found in the Grimm tales, or even earlier, and also by how much some of the stories have changed along the way — all the blindings and sexual misconduct and death have been mostly scrubbed away. Then again, none of the stories with people getting nailed into barrels and thrown down hills or into ponds have really made it into the mainstream. Beautiful Pre-Production Drawings for Disney’s ‘Cinderella’

If you’re a friend of Flavorpill, then you know how much we appreciate a clever twist on Disney films, characters, and other behind-the-scenes goodies from the animated classics. That’s why we were elated to come across these pre-production sketches of the Mickey Mouse studio’s Cinderella at website Deja View, by way of Film School Rejects. The rich, detailed drawings range from loosely composed to fully realized scenes we instantly recognized from the 1950 movie. Deja View speculates that the works were created by legendary Disney artist Ken O’Connor, who brought the fairy tale’s pumpkin-turned-magical coach to life. O’Connor contributed his talents to Disney’s biggest pictures, including Snow White, Lady and the Tramp, and Fantasia (the dancing hippos are his creation). The 10 Most Endearingly Ridiculous Hair Metal Bands Ever

In among the slew of albums out this week, we were rather surprised to see one bearing the name LA Guns. We’ll be honest and admit that we assumed these Los Angeles hair metal stalwarts had broken up years ago, but no, they’re still going strong (although they appear to have splintered into two parallel versions of themselves, a long and complicated story that’s related at Wikipedia for anyone interested). Anyway, for all that mid-’80s LA metal was undeniably awful and silly, there was something rather endearing about its sheer, unabashed absurdity — as Flavorwire hero Nicky Wire once said, “You should never be afraid to look like a fool.” As such, we’ve always had a rather guilty soft spot for some of these bands, and thus we’ve collated a list of 10 gloriously absurd acts from the genre’s heyday.
