Visit Some of History’s Most Famous Literary Salons

This morning, we spotted a few gorgeous photographs of Coco Chanel’s book-filled salon over at Book Patrol, and it got us to thinking about that much-romanticized, often revived tradition of thinkers from centuries past: the literary salon. For your daydreaming pleasure, we’ve collected a few paintings and photographs of famous literary salons from the 1600s to the 1970s. … Read More

The Fashion Industry's 10 Most Eccentric Designers

They may be fabulous, but fashion designers are also weird as hell. Sometimes their quirks lend themselves to exceptional talent, unfaltering creativity, and a diligent work ethic. Other times, all they do is make us giggle and shake our heads in disbelief. In honor of tonight’s Season 11 premiere of Project Runway — a show packed with contestants who are always entertaining, if not necessarily talented — we decided to take a look at ten of fashion’s most eccentric designers, and their respective peculiarities; we’re betting that judging panel newbie Zac Posen will be thrilled to see that he didn’t make our list! … Read More

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds In Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we couldn’t believe how different/creepy Kristen Stewart looks when she actually smiles. We hoped that a new biography that says fashion icon Coco Chanel was a Nazi spy isn’t really true. We thoroughly enjoyed Splitsider’s roundup of TV comedy’s most tragic characters, which includes poor Ron… Read More

Required Viewing: Movies About Fashion

To the delight of New Yorkers, Times readers, and street fashion fans alike, tomorrow brings the release of Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary about the bicycle-riding octogenarian whose photo collages have long been the best thing about the Styles section. Although he’s been on the scene for over four decades, Cunningham is a notorious loner, and this film — featuring interviews with everyone from Anna Wintour to Tom Wolfe — will be most fans’ first beyond-the-byline look at the photographer.

In celebration of Bill Cunningham New York, and because as far as we’re concerned, few things go together as well as film and fashion, we’ve compiled a list of fashion-themed movies you need to watch. From classic to campy, our picks are after the jump. … Read More

From Aretha to Lucy: 10 Cultural ‘First Ladies’

Happy President’s Day! Today we celebrate Washington’s birthday and think about the impact our presidents (and our first ladies) have had on our history. Though we love the Michelle Obamas, Jackie Kennedys, and Nancy Reagans of our time, we can’t help but notice that some important first ladies never made it to the White House — they were first ladies of their respective fields, be it music, theater, fashion or fiction, but they were crucial cultural first ladies nonetheless. Click through for our ten favorite apolitical American first ladies. … Read More

10 Inspirational Fashion Books for Aspiring Designers

Project Runway — the reality show with it’s own official avenue — has become a television phenomenon since launching on Bravo in 2004. Similar shows like Launch My Line and The Fashion Show have emerged, but they’ve failed to match the original’s viewership. (We’d blame a lack of Michael Kors’ quips.) Consequently, the show’s popularity has inspired a jump in sewing class rosters, and inspired a new generation of Threadheads — who are currently 35 million strong. Apparently knitting is so… Read More

What’s on at Flavorpill: Links that Make the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we searched the streets for this pimped out ice-cream truck. We reconsidered our decision to shave our armpits. We were mildly amused by the idea of pool impregnation. We were discouraged from covering “Hallelujah.” We got jiggy with it to an overtly intense “Seven Nation Army” dance routine. We barely stopped our leaky cauldrons from overflowing upon hearing more details about the Harry Potter-themed amusement park. We marveled at the similarities between Dude Where’s My Car and The Hangover. We released the inner-fashionista upon sight of the latest screenshots from Coco Before Chanel. And finally, we wondered if the Jay Leno rumor is… Read More

Rate-a-Trailer: Coco Before Chanel

The last we heard of Audrey Tautou’s latest project, Coco Avant Chanel, we were totally intrigued despite not understanding a word of the trailer. Thankfully, the English trailer is finally out, and we can properly squeal over the movie (which is called Coco Before Chanel — so that’s what “avant” means, bien sur!). Check out the trailer, and our assessment of it, after the… Read More

What's on at Flavorpill: Links that made the rounds in our office.

Today at Flavorpill, we laughed at the latest installment in the Miley Cyrus vs. Radiohead squawk off — it’s hard to decide who is being more immature here. We were infatuated by Audrey Tautou as Coco Chanel — even if we couldn’t understand a word of the trailer. We debated setting our alarm… Read More
