Photo Gallery: Escape From New York Art Show

2

The title says it all. Earlier this month art blogger turned curator Olympia Lambert staged the opening of her new show Escape From New York in the suburbs of New Jersey. Housed in an abandoned three-story warehouse in Paterson, the exhibition showcases the works of 43 contemporary artists every Saturday for the next month — including a new media response to Marina Abramović’s The Artist Is Present cheekily titled The Artist Is Kinda Present.

Photo Gallery: The Best of Art Chicago

1

Art Chicago turns 30 this year. Once the preeminent art fair in the US, Art Chicago has seen its position usurped over the past decade by the Armory Show in New York and Art Basel Miami Beach, the American version of venerable Art Basel. But, since being acquired by Merchandise Mart Properties Inc in 2006, the “Windy City” show has been making an impressive comeback. Under the umbrella of Artropolis, which includes NEXT, showing emerging artists, and the Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair, covering 20th century design and nearly everything else that’s collectible, the 2010 edition of Art Chicago features 150 galleries, exhibiting modern and contemporary art, from 55 cities around the world. Dennis Hopper, in case you were wondering, is not just an actor but an avid photographer. We’ve got work samples and a Hopper primer after the jump. UPDATE: The exhibition is confirmed, with Julian Schnabel as curator.

CLICK THROUGH for our exclusive slideshow of installations featured in system:system.

What do you get when you put 25 artists in a former convent? Curators Christina Vassallo and Adam Henry of Random Number aim to demonstrate this weekend and next, when their show system:system opens in the St. Cecilia parish at 21 Monitor Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Rather than let the abandoned building turn into something akin to this, the good parishioners are lending the space to a bevy of art-related activities:  film shoots, screenings, dance performances, and art exhibitions. We’ve got pictures of the system:system installation in progress, plus details on the show after the jump. Read More »

Lyons Wier Art Gallery: Open Call for the Digital Generation

1

Turning the idea of an exclusive and dictatorial commercial art system on its head, Chelsea gallery Lyons Wier introduces its new program Art Bazaar in these dog days of New York summer. The gallery has offered an open call to artists for seven weekends in July and August on a first come, first serve basis, as well as a solo exhibition at Lyons Wier in 2010 for the top seller.
