This post was originally published August 15, 2011.] Our recent, wildly successful posts about author-on-author insults and filmmaker-on-filmmaker insults got us thinking about similar cattiness in the music industry, which has long been a breeding ground for both feuds and lunatics. An investigation of the history of musician-on-musician insults didn’t disappoint, and we’ve collated 30 of the harshest after the jump. It’s interesting comparing them to the previous pair of posts, too. The verdict: what musicians might lack in verbosity, they more than make up for with vitriol. And UK musicians are far bitchier than US ones (or, perhaps, the UK music press just delights in reporting on insults). Anyway, don’t let your boss catch you reading this…

Take a Sneak Peek Inside Courtney Love’s NYC Townhouse

Recently, we found out that Courtney Love was facing eviction from her West Village townhouse “after she set it on fire and ‘ruined’ its designer décor” by painting and wallpapering the walls (the fire was a minor one caused by a candle). According to her landlord, Love is also $54,000 behind on the $324,000 annual rent. All this aside, or perhaps in part because of it, yesterday we were treated to a detailed romp through Courtney Love’s house courtesy of xoJane, whose editors have been using Love’s home as a “sort of Pop-Up office.” Lucky them! Love’s townhouse is full of cozy, lived-in glamour, and its cheerful blues and pinks mixed with dark hardwood and slightly sinister art make it seem a little bit like a deliciously ornate doomsday cake. 1. This year’s Golden Globe Award nominations were announced earlier this morning, and while we’ll have more to say about the picks in a bit, in the meantime, you can peruse the full list here.

2. This should be interesting: NBC has announced that Howard Stern will be joining the panel of judges on its summer competition series America’s Got Talent. Stern, who’ll be stepping in to fill the spot recently left vacant by Piers Morgan, still plans to continue doing his radio show. [via Deadline]

3. Lady Gaga, who made an estimated $90 million last year, has topped Forbes’ new list of the top-earning women in music. Rounding out the top five: Taylor Swift ($45 million), Katy Perry ($44 million), Beyonce ($35 million), and Rihanna ($29 million). [via NME]

4. George Whitman, the American-born owner of the beloved Paris bookstore Shakespeare & Company, died yesterday at the age of 98. His West Bank shop, which hosted readings by some of modern literature’s biggest names, was also a place where aspiring writers could find shelter in exchange for a little work. [via NYT]

5. Courtney Love might be getting kicked out of her West Village townhouse. Why? A minor fire last spring, some wall paper she wasn’t supposed to put up, and $50,000 in unpaid rent. [via Daily Intel]

Today at Flavorpill, we couldn’t decide which of these spots we’d rather see before we die: the Great Pyramid of Giza or Machu Picchu. We imagined what it would be like to work with a big lampshade on our head. We wanted to build our own LEGO gingerbread house. We decided that everyone needs to donate some peanut butter to their local food bank, ASAP. We read about the invention of the “TwitDot” over on McSweeney’s. We thoroughly enjoyed this Venn diagram. We were surprised to hear that Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 has just been released as an eBook, given its author’s rather outspoken rejection of the format. We fell in love with these photos of swimming babies and these photos of swimming pigs. We met a woman who dresses up like Charlotte Bronte every single day, even though she feels more like Emily. We found out that Tavi can sing. We were excited to hear that the trailer for The Hobbit will debut in front of The Adventures Of Tintin. We kind of liked the idea of Courtney Love as a junkie Auntie Mame. And finally, we decided to give our lives a Casablanca-style makeover. Is there any spot more romantic than Café Américain?

2. Also newly debuted: the first 30 seconds of the trailer for the Meryl Streep-fronted Margaret Thatcher biopic, The Iron Lady, which you can see here. What do you make of her Thatcher impression?

3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lady Gaga and her longtime creative director Laurieann Gibson have decided to part ways; it sounds like the fact that Gibson has been pursuing her own projects lately, as well as some friction over Gaga’s recent music videos, led to the split.

4. Courtney Love stormed offstage during a performance in Brazil on Saturday night after a concertgoer held up a picture of Kurt Cobain, and shouted, among other things, “I’m not Kurt, I have to live with his shit and his ghost and his kid every day and throwing that up is stupid and rude and I’m going to beat the f*ck out of you if you do it again.” [via NME]

Matt Momchilov’s ‘They Really Want You’ Transforms Queer Icons into Punk Legends

Matt Momchilov has been digging around in our subconscious. That was our first thought upon seeing the publicity image for the artist’s new show, They Really Want You, at San Francisco’s Unspeakable Projects: a sculpture of a drag queen dressed as Courtney Love ca. 1994, clutching a studded leather jacket bearing a portrait of Roseanne Barr. Momchilov approaches pop culture through a distinctly queer and countercultural lens; the Roseanne piece is part of a series of leather jackets that replace the expected macho, heterosexual hardcore heroes — Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye — with his own pantheon of Stevie Nicks, Robert Mapplethorpe, and John Waters. While celebrating these icons, Momchilov is also dramatizing fans’ relationships to the stars they worship. Epic Musician Feuds of the ’90s

What’s more surprising — that Hole have canceled a scheduled set at Australia’s Soundwave Festival because they were slated to open for Limp Bizkit, or that both bands still exist in 2011? Either way, this makes one more well-publicized feud for Courtney Love, who tweeted at the festival’s promoter, AJ Maddah, “What bloody flight of crazed fancy made you think we’d open for Limp Bizkit dude? No offense, that’s nuts.” (Lest you begin to feel some pity for Maddah, let it be known that he responded by calling her a “rotten twat.”) This Hole vs. Limp Bizkit beef, which could just as easily have happened in 1997, got us thinking about the many epic musician feuds that took place in the ’90s — a few of which did not even include Love. Courtney Love vs. Marilyn Manson

It’s not like she’s Miss Popularity in 2011, but no one was involved in more ’90s beefs than Courtney Love. You can take your pick of which you find most memorable: Courtney Love vs. Trent Reznor, Courtney Love vs. Kathleen Hanna, Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl… etc. For this list — and, we admit, partially because we found such a great, odd photo of them together — we’ve chosen her feud with Marilyn Manson. The trouble came when Hole toured with Manson in 1999 and the bands’ volatile leads talked shit about each other onstage. One live review from that period finds Love telling Manson fans that they must have “tiny dicks,” and Hole eventually dropped out of tour. Soon after that debacle, Manson made amends with his former mentor Reznor, with whom he was also feuding, and the pair mocked Love together in Nine Inch Nails’ video for “Starfuckers, Inc.”

Courtney Love Tells ‘Vanity Fair’ She’d Kill Kurt If He Came Back

Oh boy, Courtney Love. You have many haters, but here at Flavorpill, we have a soft spot for you and attempt to defend your ill-advised statements regularly. But we can’t help you when you insist on giving interviews to Vanity Fair – which, as we’re sure you remember, is the magazine that, back in 1992, published an article that claimed you’d knowingly done heroin during your pregnancy and temporarily got your child taken away from you. Courtney, these people are not your friends!

So, here’s their big headline this time: “Courtney Love on Kurt Cobain: ‘For What He Did to Us, I’d Fucking Kill Him.’” While she does indeed say these words when asked if she was angry about Cobain’s suicide — and Vanity Fair makes sure to get them into the lead — the majority of the piece (which seems to have no particular peg or reason for being, aside from the public’s eternal interest in Love’s mental instability) is actually about how much Love misses her estranged daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. While there’s no comment from Frances, her lawyers do surface to maintain that just about everything her mother says is false. And then there’s the matter of “the fraud,” Love’s theory about what has become of all the money she and Cobain should have had. Taken together, it’s your latest gratuitous “Courtney Love Is Crazy” piece — enjoy it, America!
