Artwork Inspired by the Films of Martin Scorsese

From Taxi Driver to Raging Bull to GoodFellas, few filmmakers have turned out as many influential movies as the great Martin Scorsese — and, come to find out, he’s also inspired plenty of artists from other disciplines. This weekend, San Francisco’s Spoke Art Gallery is presenting Scorsese: An Art Show Tribute, and since they’re honoring the quintessential New York artist, they’ve come east for the occasion. The show, running this weekend only at Chelsea’s Bold Hype Gallery, features work from over 75 painters, sculptors, and screen print artists. Meet One of the Lucky Film Students Who Presented This Year’s Oscars

Movie stars aren’t the only ones who help hand out Academy Awards: each year, they’re joined by a cast of presenters who help distribute the statuettes to winners. Previously, these presenters have been gorgeous, skinny model types, but the producers of this year’s show wanted to switch it up: they asked aspiring film students around the country to submit a 30-second video clip explaining how they would contribute to the future of film, then selected six winners from over 1,000 entries. In an interview with the AP, co-producer Neil Meron explained, “This tradition of the buxom babe that comes out and brings the trophy to the presenter to give to the winner seemed to be very antiquated and kind of sexist, too… Why can’t we have people who actually care about film and are the future of film be the trophy presenters?” Flavorwire reached out to contest winner and Oscar presenter Jennifer Brofer, a Marine Corps vet who currently studies at the University of Texas at Austin, to ask about her work and what it was like to take part in the biggest award ceremony of  the year. … Read More

Acclaimed director Keisuke Kinoshita adapted a Shichirō Fukazawa novel in 1958, setting his haunting film in rural, 19th-century Japan. Ballad of Narayama — which arrives on Blu-ray from Criterion today — explores an ancient folkloric tradition in which elderly and infirmed relatives are carried to a mountain and left to die. Orin (Kinuyo Tanaka) approaches her 70th year and faces her final days on Mount Narayama, but she embarks on a quest to secure her family’s happiness before her journey to the mountain. ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ ‘Lincoln’ Dominate First Major Film Awards of 2012 Season

It’s an exciting day for those of us who trust film critics over the Academy: The New York Film Critics Circle has spent the past several hours announcing the winners of its annual awards in the most excruciating way possible — one by one, on Twitter. This year’s biggest honors went to Zero Dark Thirty, which scooped up Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematographer. Lincoln also made out well, with two acting awards (Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis and Best Supporting Actress Sally Field) and a Best Screenplay win for Tony Kushner. Considering that both of these movies are likely to get several Oscar nominations, this first major awards announcement of the year may well anticipate what we can come to expect this season. The trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln has landed, and the awards contender shows the American President’s doppelganger, Daniel Day-Lewis, commanding the screen. The film is based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals and takes a look at the life of one of the most revered political leaders — when he’s not busy killing vampires. Is it schmaltzy Spielberg? How many terrible wigs can you spot? Find out in the clip past the break. Spielberg aimed to feature the man that Lincoln was and not the “monument,” according to Slash Film. Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, and Tommy Lee Jones also star. The film opens November 9, with a wide release on November 16.
