Dash Snow’s Grimy New York [NSFW]

Dash Snow “met a junkie’s end but did so in a $325-a-night hotel room with an antique marble hearth,” wrote The New York Times in 2009, playing bombastically into the myth of the New York photographer. It’s quite a myth. As a young teen, he was sent away to a Georgia boarding school for children with “oppositional defiant disorder,” he ran away to New York and proceeded to wild out through the streets and party lofts of the city. He first started taking photographs to remember where he’s been in the morning and eventually, gained notoriety and fame. Each Polaroid is a raw, autobiographical, decisive moment. Collectively, they represent an environment of excess and pedestrian vice, and yet, they’re quite compelling. Great Photographers Who Use Crappy Cameras

A few days ago, an ill-worded update on Nikon camera maker’s official Facebook page enraged hundreds. It read: “A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Do any of our Facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses? Blah-blah-blah…” As you may imagine, the response was ferociously negative. Really? “Only as good,” huh? So we suppose we should go out and purchase thousands of dollars worth of top gear and viola, instant talent? Tsk-tsk.

As Ansel Adams once famously said, “The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.” On that note, we now present you with a selection of excellent photographers who didn’t use anything fancy. They shot their masterpieces with simple Polaroid point-and-shoots, unsophisticated digital devices, and downright crappy DIY cameras. Enjoy! … Read More

After all, it’s summer. What better time to get a little dirty? Click through to see some of the messiest artworks we’ve ever seen, and let us know which of your favorites we’ve missed in the comments! … Read More
