Now in its fifth year, eVolo magazine’s annual skyscraper competition recognizes outstanding ideas from young talent that will “change the way we understand architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments.” Click through to get at good look at this year’s top three submissions, which include a Ferris wheel-inspired structure that filters polluted air; a flat tower that maximizes solar energy and collects rainwater while leaving a small footprint; and a project that turns the Hoover Dam into an inhabitable tower that “engages the falling water directly.”

Abstract Art or a New York City-Provided Bike Rack?

A sleek and modern cast-metal design from Denmark’s Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve (Bettlelab) has been selected from over 200 entries as the first-place winner in the New York City Department of Transportation’s CityRacks Design Competition.

Along with a $10,000 prize, Mahaffy and De Greeve will have the thrill of seeing their bike racks — which are intended to evoke an abstract bicycle tire — installed as the new standard on New York City’s sidewalks.
