After recently taking a look at some of our favorite TV pilot opening scenes, we decided it would only be fitting to look at some of our favorite closers across history. Some are wholly satisfying for their sense of closure after a long ride with characters we came to know and love, while others are equally poignant for their ambiguity, often thanks to early cancellation. Although these are just the final moments, revisiting these scenes has been enough to make us laugh, cry, and get thoroughly freaked out all over again, and we hope that perhaps they can provide you some healthy catharsis, too. Have a favorite we missed? Let us know in the comments — and beware that this post is, for obvious reasons, full of spoilers. … Read More

An Earth Day Video: TV’s Greatest Environmental Heroes
ALF once said, “Public lawns are not like pizzas. You can’t just pick up the phone and order more.” It’s hard to ignore sage advice like this, so as a little inspiration for everyone this Earth Day, we’ve collected some of our favorite moments in TV’s ongoing environmental crusade—set to the tune of one of the greatest green episodes in history, Community‘s “Environmental Science,” featuring the rock band Greene Daye. Other appearances include: Captain Spock, Kristen Wiig, live-action dinosaurs, and Doogie Howser attending a very sick Mother Earth (played by Bette Midler in ABC’s unforgettable The Earth Day Special). Click through to watch our video, and let us know which “green” TV episode has been your own favorite in the comments! … Read More
10 Fictional TV Towns We’d Like to Visit
Last week IFC announced that Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein would be releasing Portlandia: A Guide for Visitors this November. It’s the perfect idea for a show in which the town itself is such an important character; a more perfect vision of Portland, with a cool mayor, 100% employment, and hipster customs that seem more like local law – especially bicycle rights. And this guidebook might be our chance to find out where Ronald D. Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame lives so that we can visit him ourselves. Inspired by the news, we’ve been thinking about some other fictional TV towns that we wouldn’t mind visiting, even those without a decent Feminist Bookstore. Leave any of your favorites that we missed in the comments! … Read More
Exposed: The Actors Inside Famous Costumes
Have you ever wondered if the guy in the Chewbacca suit is just as hairy as the character he plays? Or if there’s occasionally a person inside ALF? We certainly have, and usually we’re too lazy to pause and consult the Internet. But not today, folks! Today we’re solving the mystery of costumed characters once and for all — or at least for ten of film’s and TV’s favorite masked mortals. We’ve compiled some kids’ characters, a couple sci-fi villains, and a handful of cuddly creatures paired with the suit actors within. Check ‘em out after the jump, and let us know of any other costumed characters that have piqued your pop-culture curiosity. … Read More
10 Fictional Holidays from TV That You Can Actually Celebrate
It’s the holiday season, folks! Time to deck the hallways with diapers and fill a pot with shaving cream. Oh, you don’t celebrate Yak Shaving Day? What about Merlinpeen, the Verdukian Holiday of Mouth Pleasures? Or the Fraggle Festival of the Bells? For some awesome reason or another, television is full of weird fictional holidays. Robanukah, a day of drinking and doing the robot? Sounds good to us! This year, we’ve decided to spice up our age-old holiday lineup with some fictional festivities. Because, well — who wouldn’t want to observe a day about giving yourself presents? Dust off the ol’ Festivus pole, order a meat-lovers pizza, and Treat Yo Self to some fake TV holidays after the jump. … Read More
