‘The Affair’ Season 1 Finale Recap: “10”

This week on The Affair: we are all done! And Whitney, that truth-teller, sums up the series like so: “Were you screwing my dad? Why? He’s so old and your husband’s so hot.” This is also the week when the he-said/she-said memory games that made sense in the context of characters telling a detective different stories officially revealed themselves to just plain make no sense at all (although here’s creator Sarah Treem’s perspective on it) — they’re loose enough that it’s hard not to think of Noah’s cockamamie perspective as his shitty, shitty novel. Moral of this show: May Maura Tierney get all the Emmys. … Read More

‘The Affair’ Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: “8”

This week on The Affair: apparently, it’s still going! And the “two different sides of the story” conceit grows more nonsensical and leaden with boredom by the minute. We want to learn just what love is, whether it’s the love you have with your wife or the love you have with the sexy young thing you’ve been giving it to; obviously, the latter is far more deserving of the amorphous cloud of pheromones that we like to call “luv.” … Read More

‘The Affair’ Season 1 Episode 6: “6”

This week on The Affair: we have no Detective Framing Device. Goodbye, Detective! I enjoyed your lies that actually may be truths considering this mild Affair spoiler. Instead we get the return of two Alisons: such a sexpot in Noah’s eyes, and dour, braided, sister-wife dressed and dumped in her own vision. … Read More

‘The Affair’ Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: “Pilot”

There’s a hoary old quote out there, attributed to someone long gone, that says that there are three sides to every story — your side, the other side, and the truth. Regarding the premiere of The Affair, written by cocreator Sarah Treem, we have two examples of the little Rashomons that make up our daily lives. Whether that storytelling style keeps up remains to be seen, but for now: Here’s what happened in that twenty-four hours, from our new friends, and presumable future affair-havers, Noah and Alison. … Read More

11 Famous Actors Reading Shakespeare Out Loud

Four hundred and forty nine years ago today, William Shakespeare was born. So today, we celebrate his birthday with National Shakespeare Day in the UK and the rather less elegant Talk Like Shakespeare Day in the US. With this in mind, we’ve put together a set of videos of famous actors reading or performing Shakespeare — both elegantly celebrating the man and, well, talking like him. NB: we’ve ignored clips of famous actors performing Shakespeare on film or in proper plays, leaning toward recital of sonnets and informal monologues. Fill your ears with Shakespeare read by wonderful actors after the jump, and let us know if we missed your favorite in the comments. … Read More
